Monitoring Oracle Parallel Server

This chapter describes only those Performance Manager charts which let you monitor the performance of Oracle Parallel Servers. If you need information on other features of the Performance Manager, see the Oracle Enterprise Manager Performance Monitoring User's Guide.

Use the Performance Manager to choose from a variety of tabular and graphic performance statistics for parallel servers. The statistics represent the aggregate performance of all instances running on a parallel server. The statistics are displayed in individual charts and include information on data block pings, lock activity, file I/O, and session and user information. You can also use the Performance Manager to display an overview of all of these statistics on one chart.

You can greatly increase the speed at which the Performance Manager assembles the statistics charts for parallel servers. For more information, see Initializing Database Links.

This chapter describes the following topics:

Initializing Database Links

You can greatly reduce the amount of time the Performance Manager takes to gather statistics on parallel server instances. Before you run any of the other performance statistics on the Display>Parallel Server menu, select Display>Parallel Server>Initialize. This command initializes all of the database links to the parallel server. Although it might take a couple of minutes to initialize the links for all of the instances, the Performance Manager will be able to assemble the individual statistics charts much faster.

You need to run the Initialize command only once after opening a database. Running any Performance Manager statistic on a parallel server also initializes the database links.

After you run the Initialize command, it is grayed-out on the menu and unavailable.

Total Data Block Pinging Chart

Select the Display>Parallel Server>Parallel Server Total Block Pings command to display a bar chart which represents the total block pings on the parallel server. You can drill down to view the block pings on tablespaces and objects within the parallel server. Similarly, you can drill down on individual tablespaces and objects to view the block pings on individual instances. The Total Data Block Pinging chart displays statistics from the V$PING view.

Total Block Ping Chart
When the Performance Manager displays the total block pings on the parallel server, you can right mouse click anywhere in the graphic and select Drill Down to display the block pinging at the tablespace level or at the instance level.
Command
Description
Instance

Select Instance to view the pinging on individual instances in the parallel server. You cannot drill down below the instance level. This is the same chart you would see if you selected the Parallel Server Data Block Pinging by Instance command. For more information about this chart, see Data Block Pinging by Instance Chart.

Object

Select Object to display the pinging on the tablespaces in the parallel server. From the tablespace level you can click an individual tablespace and drill down again. This is the same chart you would see if you selected the Parallel Server Data Block Pinging by Tablespace command. For more information about this chart, see Data Block Pinging by Tablespace Chart.

When you are at the tablespace level, click an individual tablespace, right mouse click, and select Drill Down to display the block pinging at the object level or at the instance level.
Command
Description
Instance

Select Instance to view the pinging on instances within the selected tablespace. You cannot drill down below the instance level.

Select Object to view the pinging on objects in the selected tablespace. Objects represent tables, indexes, free extents, clusters of tables, etc. From the object level you can select an individual object and drill down again.

When you are at the object level, click an individual object, right mouse click, and select Drill Down>Instance to display the block pinging at the instance level for the selected object.

Data Block Pinging by Tablespace Chart

Select the Display>Parallel Server>Parallel Server Block Pings by Tablespace command to display a bar chart which represents the total block pings on the individual tablespaces in the parallel server. You can drill down on individual tablespaces to view the block pings on individual objects and instances. The Data Block Pinging by Tablespace chart displays statistics from the V$PING view.

Data Block Pinging by Tablespace Chart
Click an individual tablespace, right mouse click and select Drill Down to display the block pinging at the object level or at the instance level.
Command
Description
Instance

Select Instance to view the pinging on instances within the selected tablespace. You cannot drill down below the instance level.
