K Staging Gold Image to Software Library or Staging Location

This chapter describes how you can stage a gold image to either Oracle Software Library (Software Library) or a shared location. In particular, this chapter covers the following:

Staging Gold Image to Software Library

To create a gold image and stage it to the Software Library, follow these steps:

Note:

You can use this procedure for creating a gold image of an existing Oracle Database (standalone), Oracle RAC Database, Oracle Grid Infrastructure, or Oracle Database Replay Client.

  1. In Grid Control, click Deployments, and then click the Provisioning subtab.

  2. On the Components page, from the table, select Components and click Create Component. Enterprise Manager Grid Control displays the Create Component Wizard.

  3. On the Create Component: Describe page, from the Type list, select a type from Table K-1. Specify a unique name, a description (for example, This is Database Gold Image with CPU Patches Applied), the product/patch number, the version (for example, 11g or 10.1.0.5), and the vendor details.

    Note:

    If you are creating a gold image of Oracle Grid Infrastructure, then from the Type list, select Oracle Clusterware Clone.

    Oracle Database Software Clone

    Creates gold image for the Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.x.x), Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.x.x), Oracle Database 11g Release 1 (11.1.x.x) ,Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.x.x).

    Note: This database gold image is used even during RAC provisioning.

    Oracle Clusterware Clone

    Creates gold image for Oracle Clusterware 10g Release 2 (10.2.x.x), Oracle Clusterware 11g Release 1 (11.1.x.x), Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 (11.2.x.x).

    Oracle Application Server

    Creates gold image for Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, Oracle SOA Suite 10.1.3.x , Oracle Web Tier 10.1.3, and Oracle Application Tier (OHS and OC4J) 10.1.3, J2EE and Oracle Web Cache 10.1.2, Oracle Forms and Reports 9.0.4.

  4. Click Next.

  5. On the Create Component: Configure page, specify the configuration details such as the host name, the credentials of the host, and the privilege type you want to set. The privilege type is for the destination host credentials. For example, if you have SUDO configured , then select the SUDO option. For more information, click Help on the page.

    By default, the page displays the working directory (on the destination host where you have the database home) and a list of files you can exclude during this provisioning process. If you want to set another location for the working directory and modify the list of files to exclude, then edit the fields. Ensure that the working directory has adequate space. For example, if the Oracle home if 1 GB, then the working directory must have more than 1 GB.

  6. Click Next.

  7. On the Review page, review all the information you have provided and click Finish to submit the component creation job.

    Note:

    After you submit the job, Enterprise Manager Grid Control creates the gold image and returns to the Components page. By default, the job has an ID in the format CREATEDBCLONECOMPONENT <day month date time>. For example, CREATEDBCLONECOMPONENT MON APR 12 09:22:03 PDT 2010. Enterprise Manager Grid Control displays this job ID on the Components page. You can click this job ID to view its status.

  8. On the Components page, in the table, ensure that the gold image you just created is appearing under Oracle Components and its status is Ready.

Note:

If the component creation job fails, then click the Jobs tab. On the Job Activity page, select the job that failed and click View Results. On the Job Run page, click the step, which caused the job to fail, and view the output log that describes the cause of the failure. Correct the error and rerun the job.

Staging Gold Image to Shared Location

This section describes how you can stage a gold image to a shared location. In particular, this section covers the following:

Manually Staging Gold Image to Shared Location

To manually stage a gold image to a shared location, simply use any file transfer utility to manually copy the gold image to a staging location.

Running Deployment Procedure to Stage Gold Image to Shared Location

To run the Deployment Procedure only to stage a gold image in a staging location, follow these steps:

  1. In Grid Control, click Deployments.

  2. On the Deployment page, from the Deployment Procedure Manager section, click Database Provisioning Procedures.

  3. On the Deployment Procedure Manager page, from the procedures table, select one of the following Deployment Procedures, and click Create Like.

    • Oracle Database Provisioning, for standalone Oracle Database.

    • Oracle Grid Infrastructure Provisioning for Standalone Servers, for Oracle Grid Infrastructure for standalone servers.

    • Oracle Grid Infrastructure/RAC Provisioning, for Oracle Grid Infrastructure for clustered environments.

    • Oracle Clusterware/RAC Provisioning, for Oracle Clusterware.

  4. On the Create Like Procedure page, do the following:

    1. For Name, provide a name for the custom Deployment Procedure you are creating.

    2. From the table that lists all the phases and steps of the Deployment Procedure, select all the rows and click Disable.

    3. Enable the phases and steps as described in Table K-2. To enable a phase or step, select the row of a phase or step and click Enable.

  5. Click Save.

    Enterprise Manager Grid Control saves the custom Deployment Procedure you created and returns to the Deployment Procedure Manager page.

  6. On the Deployment Procedure Manager page, select the custom Deployment Procedure you created and click Schedule Deployment.

    Based on the settings you made in Step 4 (c), select the appropriate option - either using an existing installation or using the Software Library.

  7. In the custom Deployment Procedure wizard, provide all the details that are required. Ensure that you expand the Advanced portion of the Specify Destination Host Settings section, select Stage to Shared Location, and provide the full path to the staging location.

  8. After you provide all the required information, click Finish.

    Enterprise Manager Grid Control runs the Deployment Procedure to stage the gold image to the staging location. The Deployment Procedure does not actually provision the gold image to the destination hosts because the phases and steps to do so are disabled.

    When you enable the phase Create new stage location, you will see two more steps, mainly Create new stage location from Installed home and Create new stage location from Software Library.

    After customizing the Deployment Procedure, when you run it, if you want to select the existing installation option to provision the database and also to create a gold image of it and store it in a shared location, then enable the step Create new stage location from Installed home and disable the step Create new stage location from Software Library.

    However, if you want to select the Software Library option to provision the database using a gold image present in the Software Library, and also to create a gold image of it and store it in a sharedlocation, then then disable the step Create new stage location from Installed home and enable the step Create new stage location from Software Library.
