Version 1.5

New Features

This limited release and final version of Pages includes numerous enhancements and bug fixes. The key new features are:

Completely new user interface - Pages 1.5 is dramatically different in appearance from 1.0. That is because we completely overhauled the user experience. In conversations with our first customers, the one thing we heard over and over again was that 1.0 needed work from a usability standpoint. So in planning Pages 1.5, we worked with our new team of designers and observed how users interact with the product. Where the UI was flawed, we fixed it. Where it was good, we made it better. This means your business users can more easily and intuitively create collaborative spaces, which means lower training costs, lower support costs, and higher adoption rates for your users, equalling high ROI.

No more “DataSpaces” or “LiveSpaces” – If you never used Pages 1.0 this will not mean anything to you. If you were a Pages 1.0 customer, you should be happy to know that Pages 1.5 does away with the notions of "DataSpaces" and "LiveSpaces." Now we just have "Spaces." You can still accomplish the same tasks as you could in 1.0, but accomplishing those tasks is simpler and more intuitive.

Create Spaces and pages by linking – If you navigate to a Space or page that does not exist, Pages will automatically create it for you, assuming you have the proper permissions. This feature is a great way to integrate Pages Spaces into your other enterprise applications. Imagine you want to add ad-hoc collaborative capabilities to your legacy bug tracking system. You would create a “Bug Tracking” Space and configure your bug tracking system so that each bug links to its own page in the Space. For example, Bug #55555 would have the link "http://mycompany.com/pages/web/view/page/bug_tracking/55555" and bug #55556 would have the link "http://mycompany.com/pages/web/view/page/bug_tracking/55556." Users just click the link to access a collaborative workspace dedicated to sharing comments, documents, and other content related to fixing the bug.

Deeper integration points with ALI – While Pages 1.5 has shed all its infrastructure dependencies on AquaLogic Interaction, it actually provides deeper feature integration with ALI. These features improve functionality in both applications creating a symbiotic relationship between the two. Some of the additional integration points include:

Favorite Spaces – If you have already deployed Pages in your enterprise, you know that the number of Spaces can grow quite quickly and that finding the Space you want can be very difficult. In Pages 1.5, users can add Spaces to their list of favorites for easy navigation. If you deploy Pages inside of ALI, the Pages Launcher Portlet now displays only the user’s favorite Spaces rather than the long list of all Spaces.

RSS notifications – In Pages 1.5 users can get an RSS feed for all the modifications made to their favorite Spaces. They simply click the RSS icon next to the search box on the Dashboard. They can also get a unique RSS feed for each individual Space. Our patent-pending RSS security model ensures that each feed request is authenticated (either through basic authentication or ALI login token) and that feed readers see only the content they are authorized to see.

RSS is also a good way to add Pages content to ALI communities. Community managers can add the new ALI 6.5 RSS Reader Portlet to their community and point it to a Pages RSS feed. The security is propagated so that users see only the content they are authorized to see.

Email notifications – If RSS is not immediate enough for your needs, you can also subscribe to Pages Spaces to receive email notifications of changes. Users can receive immediate email notifications for any changes made to the Space (for example, a new page version, a new attachment, a new record) or they can choose to have their notifications sent to them through a daily summary email.

Enhanced text editor – We made a number of improvements to the rich text editor which, while subtle, will markedly improve your users’ experience. Here are a few enhancements we made:

Personal blogs – Working with users of Pages 1.0, we learned that many users want to maintain a personal blog for communicating various initiatives and projects on which they are working. In support of this, Pages 1.5 provides a personal blog that users can create and navigate to directly from the Dashboard. The link to the personal blog contains the user’s name (for example, http://domain.com/pages/web/view/ls/personal_blog_for_username) and is separately secured from other Spaces in the system. Pages administrators have a global option for turning this feature on or off.

New blog and RSS components – In Pages 1.0, we found that users frequently wanted to add blogs and RSS feeds to Spaces but it was not the easiest, most intuitive action to undertake. In 1.5, we made this simple by adding two out-of-the-box components that users can drag onto the page. Now it is a two step process: drag the component onto the page and click Save. That’s it.

New list field types and templates – When creating lists, you can add user, date, number, currency, and Boolean as field types in addition to the Pages 1.0 types of text, long text, rich text, link, drop-down, and dynamic drop-down. We also included a few handy out-of-the-box list templates (contacts, events, issues, links, and tasks) for the kinds of lists that users frequently create. Pages administrators can modify these templates or even create new ones.
