Target string monitors

After you create a monitor, you must assign (target) it to one or more server instances. The monitor looks for changes in attribute values only on the servers to which it has been targeted.

Note: To temporarily stop this monitor from generating traps, un-target it from all servers by deselecting it from the Servers tab.

To target string monitors:

  1. If you have not already done so, in the Change Center of the Administration Console, click Lock & Edit (see Use the Change Center).
  2. In the Administration Console, expand Diagnostics > SNMP Agent > Monitors and select String Monitors.
  3. On the SNMP String Monitors page, click the monitor name.
  4. Select the Servers tab.
  5. On the Servers tab, check each server on which you want the monitor to function.
If you are configuring a string monitor for a domain-wide resource, such as a file store, select the Administration Server.

Note: When you assign a monitor to a server, you deploy a JMX listener and filter to the server. The listener forwards a notification to the WebLogic SNMP agent only if an event matches the criteria in the monitor.

For example, if you create a string monitor that observes the State attribute of ServerA's ServerRuntime MBean, and if you target this monitor to ServerB, the monitor on ServerB will never generate a trap, because ServerB does not have access to the configuration data of ServerA.

  6. Click Save.
  7. To activate these changes, in the Change Center of the Administration Console, click Activate Changes.
Not all changes take effect immediately—some require a restart (see Use the Change Center).
