Installing the Java Development Kit

Install the appropriate maintenance release of the Java Development Kit (JDK), not the JRE. The JDK is a superset of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and contains everything that is in the JRE, plus tools such as the compilers and debuggers necessary for developing applets and applications.
