Requirements for Stopping and Starting the Web Server

At various points in the process of installing and configuring the Siebel Web Server Extension, you might be required to stop the Web server, perform certain tasks, and then restart the Web server. Or you might only need to restart the Web server. The SWSE Configuration Wizard also stops and starts the Web server automatically, as needed.

For example, you have to stop the Web server before installing a Siebel Fix Pack release, and you have to restart the Web server after installing the Siebel Fix Pack. For more information, see the applicable Siebel Maintenance Release Guide on My Oracle Support, 880452.1 (Article ID). See also the third-party documentation for the Web server product.

Choosing the SWSE Configuration Wizard option to restart the Web server executes the following commands for supported Web servers:

  • For Oracle HTTP Server (on supported Linux operating systems), this wizard option executes the commands ompmnctl stopall and ompmnctl startall.
  • For other supported Apache-based Web servers (on AIX, HP-UX, or supported Linux operating systems), this wizard option executes the commands stopapa and startapa.
  • For Oracle iPlanet Web Server (on Oracle Solaris), this wizard option executes the commands stop and start.

NOTE:  From now on, if you must manually restart the Web server instance for any reason, then use these commands or equivalent methods, such as using the administration console for the Web server. Do not use other commands for this purpose, such as apachectl for Apache-based Web servers.
