11g Release 1 Update 3 (11.1.3.0.0)

E18421-05

November 2011

Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center is Oracle's comprehensive system management solution for managing the physical and virtual operating systems, servers, and storage devices (or assets) in your data center. With Ops Center you can use the discovery and management features to add your data center assets to the list of managed assets in Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center. You can provision, update (patch), monitor and manage the physical and virtual managed assets in one or more of your data centers from a single console, regardless of where the asset is located.

2 New Features Included In This Release

Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11.1.3.0.0 contains a significant number of new features and enhancements. These features are described below.

See the Key Capabilities and Features section of the Concepts Guide for a detailed overview of what's new in this release. This document can be downloaded from the Enterprise Manager Ops Center Documentation Library at the following URL:

2.1 Network Attributes now include MTU

The Create Network and Edit Network Attributes pages now include an option to change the MTU.

You can enter MTU values between 576 and 9216. When an MTU value greater than 1500 is assigned, the driver card of the Ethernet used by the network is automatically modified by Ops Center, if it has not already been modified. The MTU assignment is applicable only for the following Ethernet cards:

  • nxge

  • ixgbe

  • hxge

  • e1000g

  • ce

  • bge

  • ipge

For other cards, the MTU modification is applicable only when the driver is updated to support the required MTU.

When a network is assigned to a global zone or Oracle VM Server, Enterprise Manager Ops Center sets the MTU associated with the network. However, for Oracle VM servers, Enterprise Manager Ops Center does not handle the change of MTU on the existing Oracle VM Server switch. You must change the existing switch MTU to 9000 if you want to use a MTU greater than 1500. The change in Ethernet card driver takes place only when the global zone or Oracle VM Server is rebooted. If the MTU of a network assigned to a logical domain is changed, the modification takes place only when the logical domain is stopped and started.

An MTU less than 1500 cannot be applied to an Oracle VM Server for SPARC guest. If the MTU is less than 1500 the MTU of the guest is set to 1500.

Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center does not update the MTU of Oracle VM Server for SPARC switches created in version 2.5. If you upgrade from version 2.5 to version 11.1.0.0.0, you must update the MTU if you intend to use an MTU value greater than 1500.

The command to update the switch is ldm set-vswitch mtu=9216. You must reboot the system after making the change.

For IPMP groups, the MTU value has to be edited manually.

MTU settings are not preserved by OS Provisioning. You must re-enter MTU settings after performing OS Provisioning on a system.

7 Known Install and Upgrade Issues

This section covers issues related to installing and upgrading Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center.

7.1 Job Manager Properties are Overwritten by Upgrade

If you have modified any job manager properties in the jobmanager.properties file, they will be overwritten by the upgrade. The following error will appear in the log file:

18 updatePropFile /var/opt/sun/xvm/jobmanager.properties /tmp/jobmanager.properties.orig: failed to edit orig-propfile /var/opt/sun/xvm/jobmanager.properties, not changed

7.2 Upgrade Script May Not Preserve Tables

Some report data may not be preserved by the upgrade process. The upgrade may drop tables.

7.3 Discovery Jobs From Ops Center 2.5 Cannot Be Re-run

After the upgrade, discovery jobs originally launched in Ops Center 2.5 cannot be re-run due to changes in the discovery process. Create new discovery jobs to discover assets.

7.4 Roles for OS and Firmware Provisioning are Erased by the Upgrade

The Ops Center upgrade removes the old roles tied to the version 2.5 profiles. Role assignments made for these 2.5 profiles to non-admin users are abandoned and the Enterprise Controller Admin must re-grant the newly created roles for the new profiles to those non-admins who had them.

7.5 After Upgrade, OS ISO is Redownloaded by Proxy Controller and New /var/js/# is Created

After the upgrade, when a new OS Provisioning job is launched, a new version of the OS ISO is downloaded to the Proxy Controller, even though a version exists from before the upgrade. The old version is not deleted.

7.6 Enterprise Controller Installation on RHEL/OEL 5.6 gives "Error: Cannot determine Linux version"

Installing Ops Center Echelon RR gives the following errors but the installation can continue:

Error: Cannot determine Linux version.

Error: Check that /etc/redhat-release or /etc/SuSE-release is present and that this OS and version is supported.

The workaround is to continue past the error.

7.7 RHEL/OEL 5.6 Proxy Controller Deployment From UI Fails Due To Unsupported Linux Error

Deploying RHEL/OEL 5.6 PC from UI hangs, times out and fails due to the unsupported Linux version warning or error.

The workaround is to install and configure the RHEL/OEL 5.6 Proxy Controller from the command line.

8 De-installing Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center

You can uninstall the components of Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center. See the Uninstalling and Unconfiguring Ops Center Software section of the Administration Guide for uninstallation procedures.
