Appendix A       Installing iPlanet Directory Server 5.1


This appendix explains how to install iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 with iPlanet Directory Server 5.1.

By default, the Netscape Directory Server 4.16 product is bundled with the Messaging Server installation program. To install Messaging Server with Netscape Directory Server 4.16, see Chapter 2 "Installation Instructions."

While Netscape Directory Server 4.16 provides key functionality and support to Messaging Server, iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 has improved features, including: Class of Service, roles, multi-master replication, and multiple database support.

Installing Directory Server with Messaging Server

To install iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 with iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2, follow these steps:

1. Locate the iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 archive in the product installation CD or at the iPlanet downloads Web site.

2. Install iPlanet Directory Server. For installation instructions, refer to the iPlanet Directory Server Installation Guide.

3. Run the ims_dssetup.pl script on the host where iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 is installed. For instructions on running ims_dssetup.pl, see Running the ims_dssetup Utility.

   While it is possible to add schema over protocol, it is necessary to run the ims_dssetup.pl script in order to place the schema files with the system-defined schema.

4. Install iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2. For Messaging Server installation information, review this book in its entirety. For specific instructions, see Chapter 2 "Installation Instructions."
   1. If you install iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 on the same machine as iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, you must install it in a different server-root from the one in which iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 is installed.

   2. During the installation, be sure to de-select the bundled directory server component. Specifically, you should not select Netscape Directory Suite in Step 6 of the messaging server installation process.

5. If you use the Console interface to manage your servers, you will have a consoles to manage iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 and a console to manage iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2.
   1. To manage iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, run startconsole from the directory server server-root to invoke iPlanet 5.0 Console.

   2. To manage iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2, run the startconsole command from the messaging server server-root. Running this command will invoke Netscape 4.2 Console.

      Note	Note which console corresponds to which server. You should only manage iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 through Netscape Console 4.2, and you should only manage iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 through iPlanet Console 5.0.

Uninstalling Directory Server and Messaging Server

If you want to uninstall iPlanet Directory Server 5.1 and iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2, you should run the Messaging Server uninstall program (see Appendix B "Running the Uninstall Program") prior to uninstalling Directory Server.
