Chapter 3 Late-Breaking News

This chapter lists late-breaking new features that arrived too late to be included in the "What's New: A Closer Look" in the Solaris 7 (SPARC Platform Edition) Installation Library. In addition, you can also refer to the "What's New at a Glance" section in the Solaris 7 Supplement, the Solaris 7 System Administration Supplement, and the Solaris 7 Software Developer Supplement. You may also want to refer to the online new_features file in the SUNWrdm package on the Solaris CD for additional information on new features.

The information in this chapter supplements any information listed in the new_features file that is part of the SUNWrdm package on the Solaris 7 5/99 CD. If you boot from the Solaris 7 5/99 CD, the new_features file is located in the directory:

/cdrom/sol_7_599_sparc/s0/Solaris_2.7/Docs/release_info/

The default installed location for the new_features file is the directory:

/usr/share/release_info/Solaris_2.7/C


Note -

The name of this product is Solaris 7 5/99, but code and path or package path names may use Solaris 2.7 or SunOS 5.7. Always follow the code or path as it is written.


Java Development Kit 1.1.6_03

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Available

Large File Support

Beginning with JDK 1.1.6_03, the classes and methods that access files include support for large files (greater than or equal to 2 GBytes [2 31 bytes]. There are no API changes. A Java application that is run with this version of the JDK can access large files.

Large files are supported as of Solaris 2.6.

High-Performance JIT Compiler

JDK 1.1.6_03 introduced the High-Performance JIT compiler, an optimized version that enables significant performance gains over the JIT compiler bundled with the Solaris 2.6 operating environment.

The release name for this and future releases can be displayed using java-fullversion, and can be interpreted as follows:
