Preface

This guide contains initial installation instructions as well as release notes for the System Management Services (SMS) 1.4 software. With the introduction of SMS, both the initial install instructions and the upgrade instructions apply to the Sun Fire high-end servers.

Before You Read This Book

This guide is intended for the Sun Fire system administrator, who has a working knowledge of UNIX® systems, particularly those based on the Solaris trademark operating environment. If you do not have such knowledge, read the Solaris User and System Administrator documentation provided with this system, and consider UNIX system administration training.

All members of the next-generation Sun Fire server family can be configured as loosely coupled clusters. However, it is currently outside of the scope of this document to address system management for Sun Fire cluster configurations.

Chapter 1 introduces installation for SMS 1.4.

Chapter 2 describes SMS 1.4 software reinstallation.

Chapter 3 describes SMS 1.4 software upgrade.

Chapter 4 describes additional SMS software instructions.

Using UNIX Commands

This document might not contain information on basic UNIX® commands and procedures such as shutting down the system, booting the system, and configuring devices. See the following for this information:

Typographic Conventions

Typeface or Symbol	Meaning	Examples
`AaBbCc123`	The names of commands, files, and directories; on-screen computer output	Edit your `.login` file. Use `ls` `-a` to list all files. `% You have mail.`
`AaBbCc123`	What you type, when contrasted with on-screen computer output	`%` `suPassword:`
AaBbCc123	Book titles, new words or terms, words to be emphasized. Replace command-line variables with real names or values.	Read Chapter 6 in the User's Guide. These are called class options. To delete a file, type `rm` filename.
