3 Powering Off and On

This chapter describes:

3.1 Powering Off

The steps involved in powering off include:

3.1.1 Shutting Down the System and Powering Off All Units

    1. Determine the operating system version installed. Type:
-------------
uname -rs SunOS 4.1.3 -------------

The system returns the operating system version.

    2. Become superuser and shut down (halt) the system properly.
    3. When you see the > or ok prompt, turn the power off (O position) to the following:

Figure 3-1 Location of the Multi-Disk Pack Power Switch

    4. Disconnect the Multi-Disk Pack from the system.

Refer to Section 3.1.2 "Disconnecting the Multi-Disk Pack from the System," which follows.

3.1.2 Disconnecting the Multi-Disk Pack from the System

    1. Verify that the power switches are off (O) position.

Refer to Section 3.1.1 "Shutting Down the System and Powering Off All Units" at the beginning of this chapter.

    2. Locate the SCSI ports.

    Refer to Figure 3-2.

Figure 3-2 SCSI Port Locations on the Multi-Disk Pack

    3. Press in on the finger clips on the SCSI cable or SCSI terminator plug. Pull the plug completely away from the SCSI port.

3.2 Powering On

The steps to complete when completing the power on procedure are:

3.2.1 Reconnecting the Multi-Disk Pack to the System

    1. Connect the SCSI cables (or a SCSI cable and a terminator plug) to the one of the SCSI connectors on the Multi-Disk Pack.

    Refer to Figure 3-3.

    2. Connect a regulated SCSI terminator to the available SCSI connector of the last SCSI peripheral in the SCSI bus. Refer to Figure 3-3.

A regulated SCSI terminator has the word "REGULATED" stamped on it.

Figure 3-3 Connecting the Regulated Terminator and SCSI Cable

    3. Connect the power cord to the power receptacle on the Multi-Disk Pack unit and to the wall outlet (if disconnected).

3.2.2 Powering On All Units

    1. Turn the power on to the SCSI peripherals connected to the system in this order:
      a. SCSI peripheral with SCSI terminator connected.
      b. SCSI peripheral daisy-chained to the SCSI peripheral with the terminator.
      c. Continue turning on power to SCSI peripherals ending with the peripheral directly connected by a SCSI cable to the computer system.
    2. Turn the power switch on the monitor to the on (|) position.
    3. Turn the power switch on the computer system to the on (|) position.

Caution -

Always allow 10 seconds between turning off the power and turning it back on again. This pause prevents possible damage to power supply components in your system unit.
