DRAM Memory Option Guide



The SPARCprinterTM E printer is shipped with a card with 4 Mbytes of random access memory (RAM). You can add additional memory to your printer which allows you to print complex jobs and operate more efficiently.

Note - To print at 1200 dpi, a minimum of 12 MBytes of RAM are required.

There are two memory connectors in the printer. You can purchase another card to install in the second connector or purchase two cards to replace the card in the first connector. Additional DRAM memory cards comes in 16 or 32 Mbyte increments. The printer can have a total of 64 Mbytes (two 32 Mbyte cards). The printer will not function unless a card is installed in one of the two memory connectors.

Installing Memory Cards

To install the DRAM memory cards, you will:

    1. Prepare the printer.
    2. Remove memory cards, if necessary.
    3. Install the memory cards.
    4. Verify the installation.

When installing two memory cards, install the memory card in connector 2 before installing the memory card in connector 1. This is because connector 2 is difficult to access if there is a memory card installed in connector 1.

Prepare the Printer

    1. Turn the printer power Off (O) and unplug the power cord from the printer.

Note - Remember that anything stored in printer memory is lost when the printer power is turned Off.

    2. Disconnect all cables attached to the printer.
    3. Open the printer top cover.
    4. Press the purple button on the right side door to open it and locate the memory connectors.

    5. If you are installing two memory cards, remove any previously installed memory cards now.

Remove the Memory Card

Caution -

The memory cards are easily damaged by static electricity. Use a static guard wrist strap before touching the memory card.

    1. Locate the memory card you want to remove.
    2. Push out the metal clips at each end of the connector and press the card downward. Gently pull the card away from the connector.

    3. Pack the memory card in the original packaging to protect it from being damaged.

Install the Memory Card

    1. Unpack the new memory card.

    Avoid touching the metal contacts along the edge of the card.

    2. Hold the card with the notch toward the left.

Warning -

Before you continue, be sure the printer power is Off (0).
    3. With the notch to the left, insert the memory card all the way into the connector at a 45 angle.

    4. Push the card upwards until it snaps into place.

    Make sure both metal clips on the connector are fastened and the two pins on the connector are pushed through the holes on the memory card.

    5. If you are installing a second card, repeat steps 1 through 4.
    6. Close the printer side door and top cover.
    7. Verify the installation.

Verify the Installation

    1. Reconnect the printer cables and the power cord.
    2. Turn the printer power On (|).

    The Ready status message appears on the display.

    3. Choose MENUS.
    4. If necessary, choose MORE until TESTS MENU appears.
    5. Choose TESTS MENU.
    6. Choose MORE.
    7. Choose Print Menus.

    The printer prints the menu settings page. Check under the Options header for the memory card options.

    8. If the memory option is not on the list, repeat the installation.
