Preface

The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 3.0 Release Notes provides information about system requirements and new features for this version of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client. The manual provides information on how you can install, upgrade, and uninstall Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

This document is intended for new users of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client. It is assumed that readers are familiar with Web technologies and have a general understanding of Windows and UNIX platforms.

Chapter 1. New Features

This chapter describes the new features for this version of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, as well as changes made since the previous release.

1.1. New Features in Version 3.0

This section includes details of the new features in version 3.0 of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

1.1.1. Enhanced Multi-Monitor Support

Support for multiple monitors has been extended to allow access to more than two monitors. Non-linear monitor configurations are now supported.

1.1.2. Improved User Interface

The following changes have been made to the user interface:

  • Configuration dialogs have been reorganized.

  • Users can now switch from windowed mode to full screen mode during a session.

  • To enable in-session configuration changes, a menu bar is available in windowed mode, and a toolbar in full screen mode.

  • Connection status reporting has been improved.

  • Hot key implementation has been replaced by a Host key.

  • Keyboard capture option is now available in full screen mode. This feature enables key presses to be sent to the remote session.

1.1.3. Dynamic Configuration Changes During a Session

In this release, dynamic configuration changes can be made during a session. For example, users can now configure audio devices during a session, and can switch between windowed mode and full screen mode during a session.

Configuration menus are available in windowed mode, and a toolbar in full screen mode.

1.2. Changes in Version 3.0

This section includes details of changes since the previous release of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

1.2.1. Command Name Change

In this release, the name of the command used to run Oracle Virtual Desktop Client has changed from vdc to ovdc.

1.2.2. Exit Key Combination Replaced by Host Key

In previous releases, users were able to configure an exit key combination to disconnect from a session. The default setting was Left Shift-Left Ctrl-Left Alt.

This has been replaced by the Host-Q key combination, where Host is a user-configurable host key. The default host key is Left Ctrl.

1.2.3. Logging Configuration Changes

In previous releases, logging was configurable using the tabs in the configuration dialog. In this release, logging can only be configured using the --logginglevel command option.

1.3. Supported Platforms for Version 3.0

This version of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client is supported on the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Mac OS X 10.6

  • Ubuntu Linux 10.04 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (32-bit)

1.4. Product Requirements

  • Sun Ray Software. Sun Ray Software version 5.1 or later.

    Note

    You must enable access for Oracle Virtual Desktop Client before you can use it with Sun Ray Software. See the Sun Ray documentation for details.

  • Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure version 3.2.2 or later.

  • Java Runtime Environment. The latest version of Oracle Java should be installed on the client computer. During installation of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, an option is provided to download and install the latest version of Oracle Java.

1.5. Known Issues

This section describes the known issues for this release of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

12857515 – Issue With --nospan Command Option

Problem: The --nospan command option to show an extended display on a single monitor has no effect. The display is shown across multiple monitors.

Solution: On the Display tab, select the screen that you want to use to display the session.

12830249 – Audio Does Not Play Through the Correct Device

Problem: Audio does not play through the correct audio device when a non-default audio device is configured on the Audio tab. The issue is seen on Windows client computers.

Solution: Use the Device menu to switch to the default audio device, then switch back to the non-default audio device.

12808219 – Audio Not Working When Using a VPN

Problem: Audio is not heard in a session when connecting to a server over a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The issue is seen when the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) is set to a low level, such as 500.

Solution: On the Network tab, increase the Maximum Transmission Unit setting until audio performance is improved.

12800325 – Full Screen Mode Toolbar Issue With Multiple Monitors

Problem: When using multiple monitors, the full screen mode toolbar is sometimes not visible on one or more secondary monitors. The issue is seen when the monitors have different display resolutions.

Solution: Use the full screen mode toolbar on the primary monitor. Alternatively, use the Host-n key combination to switch to the desired monitor, where n is a number.

12846743 – Unable to Use the Built-In Microphone on Mac Clients

Problem: On Mac client computers, the built-in microphone might not work during a session. The issue is seen when an external microphone is attached to the client computer. This results in multiple audio devices on the client computer having the same name.

Solution: Remove the external microphone before connecting to the server.

12779208/12839029 – Client ID Command Issues

Problem: The following issues are seen when using command options to show the Client ID.

  • The Client ID string is truncated by the display window.

  • Client ID command options do not work when a non-default profile is specified in the same command. For example:

          ovdc --profile myprofile -i
    

Solution: Use the Host-N key combination to display the Client ID.

12688098 – Volume Setting is Not Saved When Using Mute Option

Problem: The current volume setting is not saved if you select the mute option in the volume slider. When you deselect the mute option, the default volume setting is used.

Solution: After deselecting the mute option, use the volume slider to adjust the audio level.

12798145 – Screen Artifacts When Playing Video Files

Problem: When playing video files with Windows Media Player using the Sun Ray Multimedia Redirection component, screen artifacts from the previous video file might be shown. The issue is seen when the window size of the video display has changed.

Solution: No known solution.

12779544 – Unable to Set Keyboard Country Code Using Command Option

Problem: Using the --keyboard-country-code command option to configure the keyboard country code has no effect.

Solution: Use the Keyboard tab to set the country code.

1.6. Documentation Issues

This section lists the known documentation issues for this release of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

Using Multiple Card Readers

Information about using multiple smart card readers is missing from the "Can I Log In Using a Smart Card?" section in Chapter 3 of the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 3.0 User Guide.

The second and third paragraphs of this section should read as follows:

"Mobile sessions, where you can start a desktop session on one client computer and resume the session from a different client computer, are supported. This feature is called hotdesking.

Oracle Virtual Desktop Client supports multiple smart card readers. When multiple smart card readers are attached to the client computer, any available reader can be used for hotdesking. The smart card reader that you use at the start of a session is used for hotdesking."

Chapter 2. Installing and Upgrading Oracle Virtual Desktop Client

This chapter describes how to install, uninstall, and upgrade Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on all supported platforms.

Note

The latest version of the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) should be installed on the client computer. During installation of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, an option is provided to download and install the latest version of the JRE.

2.1. How to Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on Microsoft Windows Platforms

Note

To install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, you must have administrator privileges on the client computer.

  1. Copy the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client Windows install program, vdc.msi, to the client computer.

  2. Double-click vdc.msi and follow the instructions.

    The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client software is installed on the client computer and entries for Oracle Virtual Desktop Client are added to the Windows Start Menu.

2.2. How to Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on Mac OS X Platforms

Note

To install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, you must have administrator privileges on the client computer.

  1. Copy the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client Mac disk image file, Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.dmg, to the client computer.

  2. Double-click the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.dmg disk image file icon.

    The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.mpkg installer file is shown in a Finder window.

  3. Double-click the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.mpkg installer file and follow the instructions.

    The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client software is installed on the client computer and an Oracle Virtual Desktop Client application icon is added to the Applications folder.

2.3. How to Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on Linux Platforms

Note

To install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, you must have administrator privileges on the client computer.

  1. Copy the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client package to the client computer.

    The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client package is available in .rpm and .deb package format.

  2. Install the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client package.

    • On Red Hat Linux platforms. Run the following command.

      # rpm -ivh package-name.rpm
      
    • On Ubuntu platforms. Run the following command.

      # dpkg -i package-name.deb
      

The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client software is installed on the client computer and an Oracle Virtual Desktop Client application icon is added to the Applications > Internet folder.

2.4. How to Uninstall Oracle Virtual Desktop Client

Note

To uninstall Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, you must have administrator privileges on the client computer.

  1. Uninstall the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client program.

    • On Microsoft Windows platforms. Choose the All Programs > Oracle Virtual Desktop Client > Uninstall option in the Windows Start Menu and follow the instructions on screen.

      The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client program files and menu entries are removed from the client computer.

    • On Mac OS X platforms. Open the Applications folder and drag the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client icon to the Trash.

    • On Red Hat Linux platforms. Run the following comand.

      # rpm -e ovdc
      
    • On Ubuntu platforms. Run the following command.

      # dpkg -r ovdc
      

      The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client program files are removed from the client computer.

2.5. How to Upgrade Oracle Virtual Desktop Client

Note

To upgrade Oracle Virtual Desktop Client, you must have administrator privileges on the client computer.

  1. Uninstall the current version of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.

    See Section 2.4, “How to Uninstall Oracle Virtual Desktop Client” for instructions on how to do this.

  2. Install the upgraded version of Oracle Virtual Desktop Client.
