Preface

This guide describes how to write applications that partition and manage system resources and discusses which APIs to use. This book provides programming examples and a discussion of programming issues to consider when writing an application.

Who Should Use This Book

This book is for application developers and ISVs who write applications that control or monitor operating system resources on the Oracle Solaris 11 release.

For a detailed overview of resource management and Oracle Solaris Zones, see the Oracle Solaris Administration: Oracle Solaris Zones, Oracle Solaris 10 Zones, and Resource Management.

How This Book Is Organized

This guide is organized as follows:

Chapter 1, Resource Management in the Oracle Solaris Operating System introduces the Solaris 10 Resource Manager product.

Chapter 2, Projects and Tasks provides information about the projects and tasks facilities.

Chapter 3, Using the C Interface to Extended Accounting describes the C interface to the extended accounting facility.

Shell Prompts in Command Examples

The following table shows the default UNIX system prompt and superuser (root) prompt for shells that are included in the Oracle Solaris OS. Note that the default system prompt that is displayed in command examples varies, depending on the Oracle Solaris release.
