2 Getting Started

This chapter introduces you to the latest release of Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, which is 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3), and helps you get started with the installation or upgrade process.

In particular, this chapter covers the following:

2.1 Introduction to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3)

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) released in October 2013 is the latest release of Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. It contains the 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) software binaries updated with new plug-ins and updated plug-in versions released in October 2013.

However, the 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) software binaries have not been changed; they have only been integrated with new plug-ins and updated plug-in versions released in October 2013. Even the Management Agent software binaries have not been changed. This is not a patch set or a patch.

The integration of plug-ins with the core software ensures that you automatically receive all the latest plug-in versions when you perform a fresh installation or an upgrade to 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3). This also simplifies the upgrade process and relieves you of the time and effort required for manually checking the availability of the latest plug-in versions and downloading them via the Self Update Console.

Using Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3), you can do the following:

  • New installation of 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3)

  • Upgrade from 12c Release 2 (12.1.0.2), which is (12.1.0.2) base release or (12.1.0.2) plug-in update 1

  • Upgrade from 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1) only with Bundle Patch 1

  • Upgrade from 10g Release 5 (10.2.0.5)

  • Upgrade from 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.1)

2.2 List of Plug-ins Integrated with this Release

2.3 Frequently Asked Questions

This section provides answers to the following frequently asked questions related to this release.

  1. What is Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3)?

    See Introduction to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3)

    Note:

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) is referred to as 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) in the rest of this chapter.
  2. What is the difference between 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) released in October 2013 and 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) released in June 2013?

The 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) software binaries released in June 2013 have not been changed; they have only been integrated with new plug-ins and updated plug-in versions, and re-released in October 2013. Even the Management Agent software binaries have not been changed.

Therefore, the only difference is the new plug-ins and updated plug-in versions. See Table 2-1 to view a list plug-ins included as part of 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3).

  3. I already have 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) installed. How do I verify whether it was installed using the 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) software released in October 2013, or using 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) software released in June 2013?

If your Enterprise Manager Cloud Control is based on 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) released in October 2013, you will see the following release description in the release.properties file. On the DVD, this file is available in Disk1/install/em/. In your OMS home, this file is available in $<OMS_HOME>inventory/Scripts/ext/lib/.

    Release:Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3)

If your Enterprise Manager Cloud Control is based on 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) released in June 2013, you will not have the release.properties file.

  4. I have installed 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) released in June 2013. Do I have to reinstall or upgrade it to get to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3)? If yes, how should I install or upgrade?

No. You do not have to reinstall or uprade your existing 12c Releas3 (12.1.0.3) installation.

The core Enterprise Manager software binaries (OMS and Management Agent) in 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3) have not been changed. They have only been updated with new and updated plug-in versions released in October 2013.

You can directly procure these new and updated plug-in versions using your existing 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) installation (that was installed with the software released in June 2013) as described in the following sections of the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Administrator's Guide:

If you want to deploy all the plug-ins in one attempt, thus saving downtime, then you can do so in offline mode using EM CLI. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Download all the plug-ins as described in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Administrator's Guide.

    2. Deploy all the plug-ins using EM CLI as described in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control Administrator's Guide.

  5. If I install or upgrade to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3), what will be the Enterprise Manager version? Is that different from the version I might see with 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) released in June 2013?

If you install or upgrade to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3), your Enterprise Manager version will be 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3). It is the same as the version you will see with 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) released in June 2013.

  6. After upgrading to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3), in the Self Update Console I do not see any name or version change for Oracle Management Agent 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) software binaries. Is that an expected behavior?

Yes. The Oracle Managment Agent software binaries have not been changed. Therefore, its name and version will remain the same.

  7. I have 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1) [with or without Bundle Patch 1] installed, but in the Self Update Console, I do not see the 12.1.0.5 Oracle Database plug-in version. Why?

The 12.1.0.5 Oracle Database plug-in version is compatible only with 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) Plug-in Upgrade 1 (12.1.0.3). So upgrade your 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1) or 12c Release 2 (12.1.0.2) to 12c Release 3 Plug-in Update 1 (12.1.0.3). As a part of the upgrade process, your existing Oracle Database plug-in version will be automatically upgraded to 12.1.0.3 version.

  8. Is it possible that a plug-in is supported on certain operating systems for OMS, but not for Management Agents?

Yes. Check the certification page as described in Appendix E.

  9. I want to use the Oracle VM virtualization and cloud management functionality. What do I need to do to enable that?

You will need the 12.1.0.5 Oracle Virtualization Plug-in and the 12.1.0.6 Oracle Cloud Plug-in. To deploy these plug-ins, follow the instructions outlined in My Oracle Support note 1371536.1.

  10. I want to use the DBaaS functionality. Do I have to apply any patches to gain access and use it?

No. If you are installing or upgrading to 12c Release 3 (12.1.0.3) Plug-in Upgrade 1 (12.1.0.3), you need not apply any additional patches to use the DBaaS functionality.

    Note:

If you currently have Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 2 (12.1.0.2) and want to continue to use it to access the DBaaS functionality, then make sure the OMS meets the minimum baseline plug-in version and patch requirements as described in My Oracle Support note 1549855.1.
  11. How do I set up the cloud management infrastructure and use the cloud management functionality in Enterprise Manager Cloud Control? What plug-ins are required as a prerequisite for using this functionality?

For information on setting up the cloud management infrastructure and the plug-ins required for this functionality, see Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Administration Guide.
