How to Set Up a Disk for a ZFS Non-Root File System

This procedure applies to both SPARC based systems and x86 based systems. It assumes that you have installed the replacement disk on the system.

1. Become an administrator.
2. To verify that the disk is accessible, launch the Format utility.

   # format

   Ensure that the new disk is included in the command output.

3. Exit the Format utility.
4. Replace the root pool on the new disk.

   # zpool replace non-root disk

5. If required, bring the new disk online.

   # zpool online non-root disk

6. Verify that the new disk is resilvered.

   # zpool status non-root

7. Attach the new disk to the ZFS pool.

   # zpool attach root-pool old-disk new-disk

In this example, a new disk c1t1d0 is installed for a ZFS non root pool tank.

# zpool replace tank c1t1d0
# zpool online tank c1t1d0
# zpool status tank
# zpool attach tank mirror c1t1d0 c2t0d0
