The hardware installation phase begins when the product arrives at its final location. After hardware installation, the Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance is ready to be powered on for the first time. The following sections describe the hardware installation steps in detail.

5.1 Stabilize the Appliance

Location: part 1, page 2, pane 2

Pane 2 describes how to stabilize the appliance once it is in place.

Steps:

  1. Locate the four leveling feet at the bottom corners of the rack.

An image shows the location of the four leveling feet at the bottom of the rack.

  2. Lower the leveling feet to the floor using the SW 12mm wrench. The four feet should support the full rack weight.

An image shows a detailed view of one of the leveling feet being lowered out of the bottom of the rack with a wrench.

5.2 Secure the Appliance to the Installation Site Floor

Location: part 1, page 2, pane 3

When the rack is in a level position, supported by the four leveling feet, it should be bolted to the data center floor, as described in Pane 3.

Steps:

  1. Obtain four bolts and washers that are appropriate for the floor type and fit through the 10mm bolt holes in the mounting brackets.

  2. Drill four holes into the floor according to the hole pattern.

  3. Optionally, if you plan to route data or power cables through the bottom of the rack, make a rectangular opening in the floor, below the rear portion of the rack, between the two rear casters and behind the RETMA rails.

An image shows the location of the four mounting brackets and the optional rectangular cutout area. Accurate dimensional information ensures that holes are drilled in the correct position, and that the cable cutout is aligned and sized appropriately.

  4. Open the front and rear rack doors. Using a 6mm Allen wrench, attach the mounting brackets to the rack.

  5. Using appropriate bolts and washers (not supplied), permanently mount the rack to the floor.

  6. Firmly tighten all bolts that secure the mounting brackets to the rack and the floor.

An image shows where the mounting brackets are to be attached to the rack. A detail bubble shows how the bolts fit through the holes in the bracket.

5.3 Attach a Ground Cable (optional)

Location: part 1, page 2, pane 4

Pane 4 describes how to attach an additional ground cable to the rack chassis.

Note

An additional chassis earth ground cable (not supplied) enables electrical current leakage to dissipate more efficiently.

Steps:

  1. Ensure that the ground cable makes metal-to-metal contact with the attachment point. Remove paint or coating if necessary.

  2. Attach the ground cable to one of the attachment points at the bottom rear of the system frame.

An image shows the location of the cable attachment points in the rack. A detail bubble provides a close-up view of an attachment point.

5.4 Remove the F1-15 Director Switch Bracket

Location: part 2, page 3, pane 5

During transport, the IO modules installed in the F1-15 Director Switches are held in place by a shipping bracket. This bracket must be removed once the appliance is secured in its final location.

Steps:

  1. Locate the shipping bracket at the rear of both F1-15 Director Switches.

  2. Pull the tabs on the left and right hand side towards the center to unlock the bracket.

  3. Carefully pull the bracket away from both F1-15 Director Switches, and out of the rack.

An image illustrates the location of the shipping bracket on the F1-15 Director Switches, and the position of the locking tabs relative to the bracket. Arrows indicate how the locking tabs must be pulled towards the center, so that the bracket can be pulled away from the rear of the F1-15 Director Switch.
