Introducing Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard and Web Agent

Oracle8i interMedia makes it easy to integrate multimedia data into Web and Java applications. You can use the Web to store, retrieve, and manage audio, video, and image data in an Oracle8i database server by using Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard and Web Agent.

Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard helps you to easily capture, store, and retrieve multimedia Web objects. Using its drag-and-drop features, you can retrieve multimedia objects from a database and display them in a Web browser. When you drag and drop multimedia objects from a database into popular Web authoring tools, Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard helps you to construct Web pages or HTML or Java applications by generating the necessary URLs to retrieve an object from a database. Using Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard, you can capture multimedia objects and store them in a database.

Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent consists of the Web Agent itself and an administrative manager component. Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent decodes URLs to retrieve multimedia object data for display in a Web browser or for other handling. It returns the MIME type, content length, and content of the multimedia object. When you use Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard to store data, Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent executes PL/SQL procedures or SQL statements to insert or update the multimedia data in the database.

The following illustrates the use of Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard and Web Agent:

1.1 Understanding Oracle8i interMedia

Oracle8i interMedia, a fully integrated component of Oracle8i, further expands the database server's reliability, availability, and data management services for integrating multimedia data from the database into internet and other applications. Oracle8i interMedia supports multimedia domain-specific types, methods, and interfaces. It focuses on a set of multimedia data representations and access mechanisms sufficient to facilitate many multimedia applications. Oracle8i interMedia contains ORDAudio, ORDImage, and ORDVideo object types.

Oracle8i interMedia stores, retrieves, and manages multimedia assets stored in the following ways:

For more information about Oracle8i interMedia, see Oracle8i interMedia Audio, Image, and Video User's Guide and Reference.

1.2 Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard

Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard easily integrates multimedia data into Web and Java applications. Using it, you can store, retrieve, and manage multimedia objects, such as Oracle8i interMedia audio (ORDAudio), video (ORDVideo), and image (ORDimage) data, as well as Visual Image Retrieval (ORDVir) data, in an Oracle8i database server. With Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard, you can:

When you drag and drop multimedia objects from a database into a Web authoring tool, Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard generates the necessary URLs to retrieve an object from the database.

You can use the drag-and-drop features of Oracle8i interMedia Clipboard with many Web authoring tools, including the following:

1.3 Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent

Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent decodes URLs to retrieve multimedia object data for display in a Web browser or for other handling. Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent returns the MIME type, content length, and content of the object to the Web application.

Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent is implemented in different ways for each supported Web server:

Oracle8i interMedia Web Agent is specifically designed to retrieve and store multimedia objects efficiently. For a discussion of differences between the PL/SQL cartridge and the Web Agent, see Section 4.2.8.
