This guide and Oracle Database Administrator's Reference (B13738-01) provide instructions for installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on hp OpenVMS Alpha systems. Documentation for the products that are included with this software is in the Oracle Database generic documentation set.

This document is intended for anyone responsible for installing Oracle Database 10g on hp OpenVMS Alpha systems.

In this document, the name of the operating system, hp OpenVMS Alpha, has been shortened to OpenVMS.
The following table describes the conventions used in the text of this documentation set.

The use of Monospace type indicates OpenVMS DCL commands, directory names, user names, path names, and file names.

| brackets [ ] | Words enclosed in brackets indicate key names. For example, [Enter]. Note that brackets have a different meaning when used in command syntax. |
italics
|
The sue of Italic type indicates a logical, including logical portions of file names. It is also used for emphasis.
|
| UPPERCASE | Uppercase letters indicate Structured Query Language (SQL) reserved words, initialization parameters, and environment logicals. |
OpenVMS command syntax is displayed in monospace font. The "$" character at the beginning of command examples should not be entered at the prompt.

| - (hyphen) | A hyphen indicates a command that is too long to fit on a single line. Enter the line as printed or enter it as a single line without a hyphen. For example:

| braces { } | Braces indicate required items. For example, DEFINE {macro1} |
| brackets [ ] | Brackets indicate optional items. For example: cvtcrt termname [outfile]
Note that brackets have a diffirent meaning when used in regular text. |
| ellipses . . . | Ellipses indicate an arbitrary number of similar items. For example:

Italic type indicates a variable or placeholder. Substitute a value for the logical. For example, directory_path.

| vertical line | | A vertical line indicates a choice within braces or brackets. For example,
