Main memory databases maintain all data in memory on a single node. Because of this, they can offer benefits for real-time applications, but they do not scale well.

Unlike main memory databases, Oracle8i Cache allows query processing to be distributed to multiple middle-tier nodes. As a result, Oracle8i Cache provides substantial scalability and performance benefits for high-capacity applications with less strict real-time constraints.
