Aliases

You can use aliases in your query SELECT statement as you would in any other SELECT statement. For more information on aliases, see the Oracle9 Server SQL Language Reference Manual. If you use an alias for a column, that alias becomes the name of the column in Oracle Reports.

When using an alias in conjunction with a parameter, you must be cautious about changing the column associated with the alias. For example, suppose you created the following SELECT statement for your query:

SELECT &NAME NAME, &PAY PAY
  FROM EMP;

Assume that when you initially build the report, &NAME is the name of a CHAR column and &PAY is the name of a NUMBER column. If at runtime you enter the name of a column for the &NAME parameter that is not a CHAR column, you will get an error. Because the name of the alias is unchanged, Reports Builder assumes that the column has the same datatype as when you built the report (that is, CHAR).
