Confine

Specifies whether or not you want to confine layout objects to the objects (repeating frames or frames) that contain them.   Confine mode is very useful for avoiding frequency errors in your report. For example, if Confine is checked, Reports Builder will not allow a field to be moved outside of its repeating frame.

In Confine mode, Reports Builder restricts the following operations such that they will not result in an object being outside of its container object's boundaries:

  • moving an object or its container object
  • moving an object or its container object to another layer (for example, using Arrangeright arrowSend to Back, Arrangeright arrowMove Backward, Arrangeright arrowSend to Front, or Arrangeright arrowMove Forward)
  • resizing an object or its container object
  • rotating an object or its container object
  • increasing an object's or its container object's border size

Default: Checked (Confine mode is on)

Confine Mode Restrictions

  • An object is contained by another object if the following are all true:

    • The object is located on a layer above the container object.

    • The object is completely enclosed by the container object.

    • The object is not explicitly anchored to an object outside the container object.

  • If an object is contained within another object when confined mode is entered, the object will remain inside its container object unless its container is changed.   The only way to change an object's container in confine mode is to do one of the following:

    • Explicitly anchor the object to an object outside its container.

    • Create a new container for the object inside its original container.

  • If you create an object outside of all other objects while in confined mode, the first container object that you move it inside of will become its container.   For example, if you create a field outside of your existing layout and move it inside of a repeating frame, you will not be able to move it back out of that repeating frame. As soon as the field is moved inside of the repeating frame, the repeating frame becomes its container object and the field cannot be moved outside of its container's boundaries.

Specifies whether you want to move or resize enclosing objects and objects in the push path when moving or resizing an object.  For example, if you try to move a field outside of its parent repeating frame in flex mode, its repeating frame will grow as necessary to contain it and any objects around the repeating frame will also grow or be pushed as necessary.

Caution: You can only resize one object at a time in flex mode.  If you try to resize more than one object at a time in flex mode, only the object whose control point you click on will be resized.  The other selected objects will be deselected.  You also can only resize objects in one direction at a time (vertically or horizontally, not diagonally).
