When a dimension has a hierarchy defined for it, you can use the Family tool to select values that have a familial relationship with a particular dimension value. For example, if you were a regional sales manager, you might select the Cities in your region. You could use the Family tool to select your region (for example, Eastern U.S.) and its children (for example, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and so on).
Or, as another example, you might have isolated a single store whose sales doubled in the course of a month. You could use the Family tool to select the parents and ancestors of the store, to see how that store's sales affected the sales numbers for the store's city and region.
To select values using the Family tool:In the Selector dialog box, choose the Family tool from the Selector toolbar.
Complete the Select by Family dialog box.
Choose OK.
