Ruler Settings

Description:

The Ruler Settings dialog allows you to specify options for ruler units, grid definition, and snap points.

Character Cell Size (points)

Defines the height and width of a character cell when the Units option is set to Character Cell. The width and height are expressed in points.

When the form module Form Coordinate property is set to Character Cell, the Layout Editor character cell's width and height default to the form character cell width and height. Otherwise, the default is the width and height of the default font.

Grid Spacing

Grid Spacing specifies the distance (measured in ruler units as specified in the Unit field) between grid lines drawn in the Layout Editor. For example, if ruler Unit is set to inches and grid spacing is set to 5, there will be one grid line every 5 inches. A grid spacing of .25 results in four grid lines per ruler unit (e.g., one grid line each quarter-inch, with the conditions above).

Number of Snap Points

The Number of Snap Points Per Grid Spacing specifies how many snap points there are for each grid line. Snap points are used in click-and-drag layout when Snap to Grid (under the View menu) is set. For example, if Unit is set to inches, Grid Spacing is set to 1, and Number of Snap Points Per Grid Spacing is set to 8, there will be a snap point at every one-eighth inch. If Number of Snap Points Per Grid Spacing is set to 2, there will be snap points at each half inch. Choose 1 if you want the snap points to coincide with the grid lines. This feature allows you to create a snap grid that is more granular than the grid lines defined by the Grid Spacing option.

Enable the Other option and enter a value in the Other text box to specify a custom number.

Unit

Unit specifies the unit of measure that is used for the rulers displayed in the Layout Editor. The default unit is the unit defined for the active form, as indicated by the form's Coordinate System property.
