About Pulldown Form Menus

A standard pull-down menu consists of three levels:

Level

Display

Function

Main

Horizontal

Items display individual menus. Items on a main menu are titles—they do not execute commands.

Individual

Vertical

Items either execute commands or invoke submenus.

Submenu

Vertical, to right of menu item

Items provide additional choices related to an item on an individual menu.

Note: While you can create multiple levels of nested submenus, this practice is not recommended since it hinders quick access to submenu items. To maximize usability, you may want to limit submenus to one level. In addition, usability experts recommend limiting the number of items on a menu to nine.
