Data Block Wizard: Creating LOVs for REFs

If the data block’s end users are going to change values in a REF lookup field, they need to have a LOV (list of values) available from which they can choose the appropriate new value.
The Data Block Wizard presents you with this window, which gives you an easy way to create the LOV.

Steps to create the LOV

First, select the REF desired. (If only one REF exists in this block, only one will be listed in this window.)

For the REF you selected, the Wizard will list all the associated tables in the database. (Remember that REFs are defined on object types, not on specific tables, and therefore a REF can potentially point to multiple tables.)

From this list of tables, select the particular table you want. The Wizard will build the LOV from the values in this table.

The same LOV gets attached to all the lookup items associated with a particular REF.

Changing the LOV

The Data Block Wizard only creates an initial LOV for you. It does not maintain it.

If you later make changes to the REF or other data structures that affect the LOV, you should use the LOV Wizard to make any associated changes required in the LOV .

You can also use the LOV Wizard if you want to adjust the format of this initial LOV.

Wizard Re-entry

If you later re-enter the Data Block Wizard for this block, and you check the ‘create LOV’ box, a new LOV will be created. (The old LOV will not be deleted, but the lookup items will be attached to the new LOV.)
