Opening Presentation Catalogs in Catalog Manager

You can open a Presentation Catalog in one of two modes:

  • Online mode — Connects to a Presentation Catalog on a running Web server. In this mode your permissions are applied. You can see only those items for which you have permission.
  • Offline mode — Connects to a local file system. In this mode, you are logged in as a super user or system user, and no permissions are applied. You can see all items in the Presentation Catalog.

Operations available in online mode and offline mode

Many of the operations that you can perform using Catalog Manager are available in both online mode and offline mode. A few operations are available in only one mode or the other. Generally, the operations available in:

  • Online mode are read-only operations and write operations that do not affect the entire catalog, such as setting permissions of an item
  • Offline mode include most of the operations available in online mode as well as write functions that affect the entire catalog, such as searching for and replacing Presentation Catalog text

Specifically, the operations that you can perform in each mode are as follows:

Deciding whether to use online mode or offline mode

Whether you use online mode or offline mode depends on the activity that you want to perform. Generally, it is recommended that you use:

  • Online mode when you want to make minor incremental changes or additions to the Presentation Catalog, such as changes to permissions, updates to a single item, or migration of new items to a production environment
  • Offline mode when you want to make Presentation Catalog-wide changes, such as globally renaming items or moving multiple items for reorganization

NOTE:  Generally, working in offline mode is faster than working in online mode. This is because you are accessing, creating, and updating the individual files directly, and Presentation Catalog does not have to communicate with Oracle BI Presentation Services as it does when you are working in online mode.
