Kodo JDO Enterprise Edition includes support for multi-tier hardware configurations, in which a PersistenceManager in the client tier communicates with a middle-tier Kodo server machine which in turn communicates with the database. This architecture can be useful for highly-scalable systems with a large number of client machines, or when the client machines do not have direct access to the database.
