Sun Fire 280R Server: UltraSPARC III Cu CPU Module Installation Guide

This guide provides the system requirements for installing an UltraSPARCTM III Cu CPU module in a Sun FireTM 280R server. Detailed instructions for installing the module in the chassis are available in an illustrated booklet, Sun Fire 280R CPU Module Installation and Removal Instructions (PN 806-6884-02), which is attached to the Sun Fire 280R airflow guide.

See the Sun Fire 280R Server Service Manual (PN 806-4807-10) for information about accessing the airflow guide inside the chassis.

System Requirements

If you are adding a module to a Sun Fire 280R server that already is successfully configured with an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module, then you have met the requirements in this guide. You can go directly to the installation booklet in the chassis.

If you are upgrading a Sun Fire 280R server with an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module for the first time, then you must make sure the server meets each of the requirements described in the following sections.

Hardware Requirements

This section provides the requirements that pertain to both CPU modules and the fan tray that cools those modules.

CPU Modules

You can configure your system with one or two UltraSPARC III Cu CPU modules of the same speed (900 MHz). The part number of this module is 501-6002-01.

Fan Tray Assembly

You must install the fan tray assembly (PN 540-5088-02) to cool the UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module. If you do not have this fan tray, contact a Sun sales representative or service provider to order one.

Note - The previous version of the fan tray assembly (PN 540-4434-02) does not achieve sufficient cooling capacity and does not support CPU module 501-6002-01.

Software and Firmware Requirements

To operate a Sun Fire 280R server with an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module, your system must have specific versions of the SolarisTM operating environment software and of the system PROM firmware installed.

System Software

Your system must be running the Solaris 8 (10/01) operating environment software to support an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module. If you do not have this version installed, contact your Sun sales representative or service provider to obtain it.

To determine the current version of your Solaris software, type the following command in a terminal window or console:

more /etc/release

The system responds with a message specifying the installed Solaris release.

Firmware

The system PROM firmware required to support an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module is version 4.4.4 of the OpenBootTM PROM. If you are operating a Sun Fire 280R server with an UltraSPARC III Cu CPU module installed, then your firmware is already at this level. If you are upgrading a system to include this module, install patch number 111292-05, which will update your firmware to version 4.4.4.

Determining the PROM Revision

To determine the OpenBoot PROM version installed on your server, type one of the following commands in a terminal window or console:

/usr/platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R/sbin/prtdiag -v
/usr/platform/sun4u/sbin/prtdiag -v

You can find the OpenBoot PROM version number towards the bottom of the output of this command under the phrase System PROM revision.
