Q.

What is Gecko?

A.

Netscape 6.2.3 is based on Netscape Gecko, a fully standards-compliant layout engine. The layout engine is at the heart of a browser -- it is the software that controls how a Web page appears on your screen. Since the beginning of the Web, industry groups and Web site developers have clamored for a browser that supports all the currently accepted standards for Web content. To people surfing the Web, Netscape 6.2.3 means that Web pages will look better because you can view all the latest, eye-pleasing special effects, graphics, and styles that Web developers include in their sites.

Q.

What happened to Netscape Communicator 5.0?

A.

Netscape 5.0 was based on the 4.x code base that Netscape released in 1998. At about the same time, Netscape also released the beginnings of Netscape Gecko -- a new code base. Gecko's superior performance and standards support created great demand. In response, Netscape switched code bases and rewrote the software based on Gecko, canceling version 5.0 (Mozilla classic) in favor of Netscape 6.

Q.

What is the relationship between Netscape 6.2.3 and Mozilla?

A.

The Mozilla Organization was created by Netscape Communications Corporation to develop an open source Web browser as a successor to Netscape Communicator 4.x. The Mozilla organization is comprised almost entirely of Netscape employees. The Mozilla browser is a complete rewrite, with almost no source code in common with Netscape Communicator 4.x. Netscape 6.2.3 is the brand name for the commercialized Mozilla browser. In other words, Netscape adds branding and some proprietary third-party components to the Mozilla source code, and calls that product Netscape 6.x. Chances are, a bug in Netscape 6.2.3 came from the Mozilla source code base, which means that you can debug the problem yourself since the code is freely available.

Q.

Does Netscape 6.2.3 use Runtime Type Information (RTTI)?

Q.

Will my obsolete patches be updated automatically?

A.

At the beginning of the Netscape 6.2.3 installation process, the checkpatches.sh script runs to determine whether all required patches are installed. If there are patches missing, a list is generated and you are prompted to continue or stop. At this point, you should stop and download the required patches from the download page.

On completion, execute patchadd for each missing patch. If you attempt to add a patch obsoleted by a previously installed patch, a status message appears; ignore installing that particular required patch. Once all patches have been installed, restart the Netscape 6.2.3.

What is Netscape Composer?

A.

Netscape Composer is an HTML editor that lets you create your own standards-compliant Web documents. You don't have to know HTML to use Netscape Composer; it makes creating Web documents as easy as using a word processor. Toolbar buttons let you add lists, tables, images, links, colors, and font styles. You can see what your document will look like on the Web as you create it, and easily share your document with other users, regardless of which browser or e-mail program they use.
