To start a GNOME Desktop session, users must log in to authenticate their
identity. The login screen provides a gateway to the GNOME Desktop for the
user. The GNOME Display Manager (GDM) application controls the login screen. You can configure GDM to customize how users log in to the system.
GDM also enables you to log in to a new session.
You do not need to log out from the current session before you log in to the
new session.
