The information in this chapter describes how
to use PDAs with Ximian Evolution
.
A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a hand-held
computer that you can use as a personal organizer. You can store appointments,
tasks, contacts, and other information on your PDA. You can also transfer
appointments, tasks, and contacts data between your PDA and Evolution
.
Before you can use your PDA with Evolution
,
you must first configure your PDA for use with the Java Desktop System. You
must also specify how to transfer data between your PDA and Evolution
. To do this, you configure conduits for the PDA. A conduit is an application that manages the transfer of data between
your computer and your PDA. For information about how to configure your
PDA, and about how to configure conduits for your PDA, see the Java Desktop System Release 2 User Guide.
The following table lists the conduits that are available for the component
applications of Evolution
, and the PDA applications
to which the conduits correspond:
Application |
Conduit |
PDA Application |
---|---|---|
Calendar |
ECalendar |
|
Tasks |
EToDo |
|
Contacts |
EAddress |
|
Evolution
supports only PDAs that use
the PalmOS 5 operating system.
Perform the following steps:
Connect your PDA to your computer. If your PDA has a cradle, place the PDA in the cradle.
Ensure that your PDA is configured with your computer. For information about how to configure a PDA, see the Java Desktop System Release 2 User Guide.
Specify how to transfer data between your PDA and Evolution
. To do this, you configure conduits for the PDA. For
information about how to configure conduits for your PDA, see the Java Desktop System Release 2 User Guide.
Press the HotSync button on your PDA.
Evolution
does not synchronize the
categories of your appointments, tasks, or contacts.
To synchronize a PDA with Sun Java System Calendar
Server
folders, you must specify a Calendar Server
calendar folder as your default calendar folder and a Calendar Server
task folder as your default task folder. For
information about how to specify default folders, see Setting Folders Preferences.
You must also select a Calendar Server
folder
before you press the HotSync button on your PDA. If
you do not perform these actions, Evolution
might
behave abnormally during synchronization.
