B. About the prepare_system Command
This readme describes the Sun Studio 12 system preparation tool, which runs when you issue the prepare_system command from the product download directory or the product DVD. The tool also runs as part of the graphical user interface installer and the command-line installer for the Sun Studio 12 software when you run these installers from the download directory or the DVD.
The Sun Studio 12 software requires the following prerequisite software, which is included in the product download file and on the product DVD:
If you install the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) component, the following prerequisite software, which is included in the product download file and on the product DVD, is also required:
- Operating system patches required by the Sun Studio 12 software. These patches are required for correct operation of the Sun Studio software and must be installed on the system that will run the software.
- J2SE Development Kit (JDK) 5.0, Update 9. For optimum performance, install the JDK software locally on each machine that will run the Sun Studio 12 software.
- Patches required by the JDK software. These patches are required for correct operation of the JDK software.
- NetBeans 5.5.1 IDE. For optimum performance, install this software locally on each machine that will run the Sun Studio 12 software.
- NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack 5.5.1 (for the English-only release of Sun Studio 12 software) or NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack 5.5.1 update 1 (for the multi-language release of Sun Studio 12 software). For optimum performance, install this software locally on each machine that will run the Sun Studio 12 software.
The prepare_system command lets you check the system on which you are going to run the Sun Studio software for the prerequisite software, and install any missing software. You can check the system without having root privileges on the system, but you must have root privileges to install missing software.
C. Using the prepare_system Command
Using the Command Before Installing the Sun Studio Software
You can run the prepare_system command from the download directory or the product DVD before installing the Sun Studio software. For information on using the prepare_system command before installing the Sun Studio 12 software, see the Sun Studio 12 Quick Installation (English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese) guide.
Using the Command After the Sun Studio Software is Installed
After the Sun Studio 12 software is installed, the prepare_system command is available in the /installation_directory/bin directory (for example, /opt/SUNWspro/bin on Solaris platforms, or /opt/sun/sunstudio12/bin on Linux platforms).
If the Sun Studio software is installed on a server, you can use the command to check for the prerequisite software on client systems that will be running the Sun Studio software on the server. If the prerequisite software was copied to the server when the Sun Studio software was installed, you can use the command to install any missing prerequisite software on the client systems. If the prerequisite software was not copied to the server, you can download it by going to the Sun Studio 12 Download Options page, choosing the Download Product Tarfile option, and downloading the System Preparation Tool tarfile from the download page.
If you update the English-only release of Sun Studio 12 software on a server with product patches using the installer provided with the multi-language release, then you must copy the prerequisite software included with the multi-language release to the server. You can then use the prepare_system command to update the prerequisite software on client systems.
For the syntax of the prepare_system command, see the prepare_system(1) man page. For information on the Sun Studio 12 installers and copying the prerequisite software to a server, see the Sun Studio 12 Installation Reference (English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese) guide.
