Java Desktop System Email and Calendar User Guide

Chapter 11 Using PDAs on Linux Systems

The information in this chapter describes how to use PDAs with Email and Calendar on the Java Desktop Systems on Linux systems.

Configuring Email and Calendar for Use with PDAs

A PDA is a hand-held computer that you can use as a personal organizer. You can store appointments, tasks, contacts, and other information on your PDA. You can also transfer appointments, tasks, and contacts data between your PDA and Email and Calendar.

Before you can use your PDA with Email and Calendar, you must first configure your PDA for use with the Java Desktop System on Linux. You must also specify how to transfer data between your PDA and Email and Calendar. To do this, you configure conduits for the PDA. A conduit is an application that manages the transfer of data between your computer and your PDA. For information about how to configure your PDA, see the Java Desktop System Release 3 User Guide.

The following table lists the conduits that are available for the component applications of Email and Calendar, and the PDA applications to which the conduits correspond:

Application

ECalendar

Date Book

Tasks

EToDo

Note –

Email and Calendar supports only PDAs that use the PalmOS 5 operating system.

To Specify How to Transfer Data

To specify how to transfer data between a PDA and Email and Calendar, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Launch, then choose Preferences -> PDA Devices to start the PDA Devices preference tool.

  2. Ensure that the PDA daemon is active and functions properly. To do this, add the gnome-pilot panel application to a panel. If the gnome-pilot icon appears in black and white, the PDA daemon is active.

  3. In the Conduits tabbed section on the Pilot Settings dialog, select the PDA whose conduits you want to configure from the Pilot Name drop-down list.

  4. To enable a conduit, select the conduit from the table, then click on the Enable button. Enter configuration details for the conduit in the Conduit Settings dialog. The elements in the Conduit Settings dialog are described in the following table:

To Synchronize Your PDA

To synchronize your PDA with Email and Calendar, perform the following steps:

  1. Connect your PDA to your computer. If your PDA has a cradle, place the PDA in the cradle.

  2. Ensure that your PDA is configured with your computer. For information about how to configure a PDA, see the Java Desktop System Release 3 User Guide.

  3. Specify how to transfer data between your PDA and Email and Calendar. To do this, you configure conduits for the PDA. For information about how to configure conduits for your PDA, see To Specify How to Transfer Data.

  4. Press the HotSync button on your PDA.

Note –

Email and Calendar does not synchronize the categories of your appointments, tasks, or contacts.

Note –

To synchronize a PDA with Sun Java System Calendar Server folders, you must specify a Calendar Server calendar folder as your default calendar folder and a Calendar Server task folder as your default task folder. For information about how to specify default folders, see Setting Folders Preferences.

You must also select a Calendar Server folder before you press the HotSync button on your PDA. If you do not perform these actions, Email and Calendar might behave abnormally during synchronization.
