Personalized Knowledge Services is a new product that incorporates existing My Compass technology with collaborative discussion technology and brings these features to the iPlanet Portal Server.

INSTALLING PERSONALIZED KNOWLEDGE SERVICES

Personalized Knowledge Services is a plugin product for iPlanet Portal Server. You must have the iPlanet Portal Server and the Compass component of the Portal Server installed before installing Personalized Knowledge Services.

Solaris: Use the 'Package Manager' to install Personalized Knowledge Services

Windows NT: double click in the executable file included in the Personalized Knowledge Services package to install Personalized Knowledge Services.

NOTE: Restart your Compass instances after installation to ensure all PKS features are activated.

CONFIGURING MY COMPASS

User accounts for My Compass are created and stored in an LDAP server such as iPlanet Directory Server. You can access your LDAP configuration in the Global tab in the Administration screen. If you didn't configure the LDAP server, you will need to contact your LDAP administrator to get the settings.

Once you have put your LDAP settings in global, you must enable My Compass. Do this by clicking on the 'My Compass' tab in the server you want to enable My Compass on and select the "Use the Administrator defined in the Administration Server Global Settings" tab and click "Enable My Compass Now"

Now create yourself as a user in the Web Server Administration, under the 'Users & Groups' tab.

Okay, now let's start to have some fun. If you have already created categories in your iPlanet Compass Server, you may continue. If not, please refer to the iPlanet Compass Server Quickstart guide, "Quick-Start Scenario 2: Category browsing" to create and populate some categories, then return here.

Let's test your My Compass installation. Go to the my compass server, there should now be a "My Compass" button in the upper right hand corner. When you click it, you should be prompted for the userid and password you just created.

When you log in, you be asked a couple of questions, chances are you want to leave them both as 'Yes' and then click the "Register me now!" button".

The next page will launch your interest profile editor. This will give you the opportunity to add several categories to track in My Compass. Select categories by clicking on the folders and selecting the minimum rating you wish a document to have to receive it in your My Compass newsletter.

You may also check the box at the bottom to receive documents systemwide that receive a high rating.

Select as many categories as you like, save it, and then click the "Finish" button.

The next screen is the welcome screen. This is a sample compass page that tells the end user a little about how My Compass works.

We invite you to change this screen at any time you want so you may present the new users in your company with any information you wish.
The file is:
\plugins\compass\docs\gv\welcome_pro.html

Now to send yourself your first newsletter. Go back to the Compass Admin and go to the My Compass tab. Then click the "Activate Profiler Button"

Then go back to your My Compass screen and refresh it and you should have your first newsletter.

Also, if you selected to have the newsletters mailed to you, you should receive a copy in your mail program.

If you are having trouble getting your mail, be sure you have a mailing agent selected in your Compass Settings:

NOTE: This affects the search function for all Compass users. It does not control the template used for Search in My Compass.

Rating documents

There are several ways to rate a document. If you are in your My Compass newsletter (either mailed to you or on the My Compass web page) or the My Compass Search, you may click either the 'Rating' icon or the 'Title' link:

And you will get the web page with the rating bar. To rate a page, simply select your rating from the pull down:

NOTE: From a My Compass enabled Compass template, you will only get the rating bar if you click on the 'Rating' icon, not on the 'Title' link.
