Horizontal and Vertical Scaling Examples

This figure shows three versions of the architecture for Messaging Server configured as a message store.

• The first version is the base line version, and supports fifty thousand users with a total of four CPUs.
• The second version illustrates vertical scaling to support 250 thousand users with a total of eight CPUs.
• The third version illustrates horizontal scaling to support two million users with a total of 64 CPUs.

The base version shows two physical servers, each hosting an instance of Messaging Server configured for messaging store. Each physical server contains two CPUs and four gigabytes of RAM, for a total of four CPUs.

The vertical scaling version shows two physical servers, each hosting an instance of Messaging Server configured for messaging store. Each physical server contains eight CPUs and 16 gigabytes of RAM, for a total of 16 CPUs.

The horizontal scaling version shows two sets of four physical servers, each server hosting an instance of Messaging Server configured for messaging store. Each physical server contains eight CPUs and 16 gigabytes of RAM, for a total of 64 CPUs.
