Multi-Master Replication Example

This figure shows how to replicate multi-master instances of Directory Server.

The figure contains two sets of client applications that read and write to Directory Server. One set is Clients 1. The other set is Clients 2.

The figure also contains two instances of Directory Server, each configured as a master, Master 1 and Master 2. Each master has a corresponding master LDAP directory store and change log.

The figure also shows two sets of Directory Server consumers, Consumers 1 and Consumers 2. Each Directory Server consumer has its own replica copy of the LDAP Directory store. Consumers 1 contain replicas of Master 1. Consumers 2 contain replicas of Master 2.

The figure shows the flow of data as follows:

• Clients 1 write changes to Master 1
• Clients 2 write changes to Master 2
• Clients 1 read and search from any instance of Consumers 1.
• Clients 2 read and search from any instance of Consumers 2.
• Master 1 updates the databases for Consumers 1.
• Master 2 updates the databases for Consumers 2.
• Any client from Clients 1 that writes to a Consumer 1 instance has the write operation referred back to the client as a write operation directed to Master 1.
• Any client from Clients 2 that writes to a Consumer 2 instance has the write operation referred back to the client as a write operation directed to Master 2.
