This topic provides an illustration of the Sun™ Grid Rack System and a table of rack configuration rules.
The illustrations show a Sun Grid Rack System, front and rear views, one with Sun Fire™ X2100 compute nodes and the other with Sun Fire™ X4200 compute nodes. The front and rear cabinet doors are not shown. Both systems shown in the illustrations are fully populated with up compute nodes, one management node, one terminal server, one Keyboard, Monitor Mouse (KMM), one management switch, one data switch and two modular power system (MPS) units. Filler panels visible from the front of the unit cover the open spaces in the bottom of the rack.
Your Sun Grid Rack System will ship fully cabled and populated with the specific components you order. For a description of each component, see About Sun Grid Rack System Hardware Components.
Sun Grid Rack System with Sun Fire™ X2100 Compute Nodes.
Sun Grid Rack System with Sun Fire™ X4200 Compute Nodes.
Component | Note |
---|---|
Sun Fire™ X2100, Sun Fire™ X4100, Sun Fire™ 4200 compute nodes | A rack can be fully loaded with only compute nodes. If the rack contains only compute nodes, install the first node in the lowest U location above the MPS and continue consecutively up the rack with no gaps. You can use combinations of Sun Fire™ X2100, X4100, and X4200 servers. |
Sun Fire™ X4100, management node | Install the management node in the first available location after the switches and terminal servers but before the first compute node. |
48 Port Cisco switch
24 Port Cisco switches | Install switches in the first rack unit locations after the MPS unit with no gaps. |
KMM unit | Install in rack unit locations U21, U22, or U23, depending on what is positioned below and so that there are no gaps between adjacent units. |
Terminal Server | Install in the first location after the MPS unit or, if switches are present, in the first location after the switches. If the terminal server is present, skip one rack unit location before installing the first compute or management node. |
Data Cable Harness | A data cable is installed only if a data fabric switch is present. |
Serial Cable Harness | A serial cable is installed only if a terminal server is present. |
Management Cable Harness | A management cable is installed only if a management switch is present. |
