Named Pipes

SunOS 5.0 through 5.7 provides named pipes or FIFOs. The FIFO is more flexible than the pipe because it is a named entity in a directory. Once created, a FIFO can be opened by any process that has legitimate access to it. Processes do not have to share a parent and there is no need for a parent to initiate the pipe and pass it to the descendants. See "Named Pipes" for more information.
