DNS obtains your default domain name from
your resolv.conf file.
If resolv.conf is unavailable, and the
naming service is NIS or NIS+, the Sun implementation of DNS obtains the
default domain name from those services.
If you are not running NIS or NIS+, resolv.conf cannot specify the domain or set the LOCALDOMAIN environment variable.
