A session occurs between the time that a user logs in to the desktop environment and the time that the user logs out. 会话管理器在登录管理器验证用户身份后启动。通过会话管理器，用户可以管理会话。例如，用户可以保存会话状态，并在下一次登录时返回到该会话。

至少有下列应用程序在会话中运行：

• 会话管理器，gnome-session。

• GConf X 设置守护进，gnome-settings-daemon。

• gnome-panel 应用程序，用于运行 GNOME 桌面上的面板。

• Metacity 窗口管理器。
