*Glossary

bus
A signal route to which several parts of a computer system may be connected so that signals can pass between them.
Desktop Storage Module
An external data storage unit that contains either a full-height high capacity hard disk drive or a tape drive which uses 8mm tapes.
Desktop Storage Pack
An external data storage unit that contains a hard disk drive (Desktop Disk Pack), a tape drive (Desktop Backup Pack), or a compact disc drive (Desktop SunCD Pack) that can be connected to a computer system or to the SBus Expansion Subsystem.
device driver
Software that controls the Expansion Adapter card.
EPROM
Erasable programmable read-only memory.
Expansion adapter card
A single-width SBus card which must be inserted into the computer system in order to operate the SBus Expansion Subsystem. This card transmits SBus related information to external hardware.
Expansion Cable
See SBus Expansion Subsystem cable.
External Storage Module
An external unit that contains disk or tape drives and that can be connected to a computer system or to the SBus Expansion Subsystem.
kernel
The core of the SunOS system software that manages all the resources of the system, including file system management, virtual memory, reading and writing files to disk and tapes, scheduling of processes, printing, and communicating over a network. System administrators can configure a kernel to improve system performance. A system cannot run without a functioning system kernel.
MMU
Memory management unit chip on the main logic board of your computer system.
SBus card
A printed circuit board which can be installed in either the computer system or the SBus Expansion Subsystem.
SBus Expansion Subsystem
A peripheral device attached to a computer system. The SBus Expansion Subsystem provides three additional SBus slots and space for two optional SCSI hard disk drives. The SBus Expansion Subsystem consists of the following: the SBus Expansion Subsystem chassis, the Expansion adapter card (in the computer system), and the SBus Expansion Subsystem cable.
SBus Expansion Subsystem cable
A shielded round cable which connects the Expansion adapter card, installed in the computer system, and the 96-pin connector on the back panel of the SBus Expansion Subsystem. The SBus Expansion Subsystem cable has 96-pin female connectors on each end.
SBus Expansion Subsystem controller board
A printed circuit board which occupies the bottom of the SBus Expansion Subsystem chassis. The SBus Expansion Subsystem controller board consists of the following modules: connectors, control logic, clock logic, cable differential drivers and receivers, and the main chip for the SBus Expansion Subsystem.
SCSI
An acronym for Small Computer System Interface that is pronounced "scuzzy".
SCSI connector
There are two SCSI connectors (ports) on the back panel of the SBus Expansion Subsystem. The SCSI connectors on the SBus Expansion Subsystem are used to connect SCSI devices, such as disk drives, Desktop Storage Packs, Desktop Storage Modules, and External Storage Modules.
SCSI terminator
A device that terminates the signal coming through an unused SCSI connector.
You must terminate the last SCSI connector in the SCSI bus.
slot
An electronic connection and a long, narrow groove or opening in the computer system and the SBus Expansion Subsystem designed to receive a printed circuit board (such as an SBus card).
SunDiag
Diagnostic software which runs under the SunOS software. SunDiag tests the functionality of the SBus Expansion Subsystem hardware, such as the SBus Expansion Subsystem controller board and the Expansion Adapter card.
wrist strap
A device that provides grounding for static electricity between your body and the SBus Expansion Subsystem or the computer system. Electric current and voltage do not pass through the wrist strap. Before installing or removing SBus cards or disk drives, attach the wrist strap. Before inserting or removing the Expansion adapter card in the computer system, attach a wrist strap.
