Preface

The SBus Prestoserve User's Guide is used to install and operate the SBus Prestoserve option available for Sun workstations and servers. This user's guide along with the SBus Installation Guide provides all of the information that you need to install and operate the Sun Prestoserve hardware and software. You should also have the SunDiag User's Guide ready for reference when running diagnostics at the end of installations.

How to Use This Book

This book describes the installation and use of two different versions of the SBus Prestoserve driver; one for the SunOS 4.x operating system and one for the Solaris 2.x operating system. The hardware installation procedures are the same for both operating systems and are described in Chapter 1. The software installation procedure for SunOS 4.x is described in Chapter 2 and the software installation procedure for Solaris 2.x is described in Chapter 3.

Chapters 4 and 5 have additional information which can help you manage your new Prestoserve utility. These chapters have information for both operating systems. Use the information that applies to your operating system. The appendices contain additional information that could be helpful should problems arise with the Prestoserve utility.

The SBus Card Installation Guide covers the hardware installation, if you are installing the Prestoserve SBus option. Use part number 800-6177-xx for desktop SPARCstations or 800-6366-xx for deskside SPARCservers.

When You Need Help with UNIX Commands

This manual may not include specific software commands or procedures. Instead, it names software tasks and refers you to operating system documentation or the handbook that was shipped with your new hardware.

The type of information that you might need to use references for includes:

Task Map for Getting Your System Running

The diagram below outlines the tasks you can perform to successfully install a new peripheral. Each numbered item in the diagram represents a procedure and the arrows point to manuals in which these procedures are detailed.

After you perform these tasks, you will be ready to use the new hardware with your system.
