Preface

Who Should Read This Manual

This manual is written for experienced system administrators who will install the Sun Network CoProcessor (SNC) on one or more NFS file servers in their network.

While this manual thoroughly describes the installation of the SNC; the person installing this product should have experience with both Sun servers and SunOS or Solaris software. Required skills include installing boards and installing software from CD-ROM, and may (depending on your particular installation) also include modifying configuration files, generating a new kernel, and modifying .rc files.

Organization of This Manual

This manual contains instructions installing the Sun Network CoProcessor. Additional information is presented in appendixes to help you do the installation.

This manual includes four main sections and several appendixes.

Chapter 1, Software Installation, contains instructions for installing the software, including the building of a new Unix kernel.

Chapter 2, Hardware Installation, contains detailed descriptions with illustrations for installing the Sun Network CoProcessor hardware.

Chapter 3, Installation Integration, describes the completion phase of the installation process.

Appendixes contain supplemental information which may be useful during the installation process of the Sun Network CoProcessor. The product can be installed in many cases without using the appendixes, but in some cases they may be needed to handle the special requirements of a particular server configuration.

How to Use This Manual

Read this Preface. This section gives an introduction to the manual.

Chapters 1 through 3 should be read if you are installing the Sun Network CoProcessor. They contain step-by-step procedures to follow. The appendixes contain supplemental information. If this supplemental information is pertinent to a part of the installation process, you will be referred to the appropriate appendix when and where it is useful.

Appendix E, "Common Problems", contains a number of common mistakes that have been encountered by other people during the installation process. This appendix may not be needed, but it is invaluable if you do need it.

Appendices will be referred to at various points within this manual. If the reference is pertinent to your installation, you should consult the specified appendix. This includes conflicts that may arise when other third party hardware is installed in the server. You should be familiar with the list of subjects covered in the appendices.

Conventions and Terminology

This manual uses the following conventions and terminology.

The term "SNC" is used to refer to the 1.2 Sun Network CoProcessor.

The term "switched SNC" refers to the earliest version of the SNC hardware. This version of the SNC uses a DIP-switch array for setting VME addressing, the current version of the SNC uses a jumper array for the same purpose.

Commands, filenames, program output, and sections of code are printed in Courier font.

User entries when mixed with program output are printed in Bold Courier font.

References to Unix programs and their man page entries follow the standard UNIX conventions.

Metasymbols and other text which must be replaced before they can be keyed in are printed in italic.
