1 Introduction

This manual contains instructions for installing DSIMMs and VSIMMs in SPARCclassic(TM), SPARCclassic X, and SPARCstation(TM) LX systems.

About SPARCclassic/SPARCstation LX DSIMMs

SPARCclassic and SPARCstation LX system units come equipped with at least 16 megabytes of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), expandable to 96 megabytes. Physically, DRAM chips are grouped in single in-line memory modules (DSIMMs) that plug into DSIMM slots located on the main logic board of the system unit. The main logic board contains six DSIMM slots capable of accepting either 4-megabyte or 16-megabyte DSIMMs.

The maximum memory configuration is 96 megabytes using six 16-megabyte DSIMMs. You can combine 4-megabyte DSIMMs with 16-megabyte DSIMMs in the same system; however, you must add DSIMMs in identical pairs. That is, you can add a pair of 4-megabyte DSIMMs or a pair of 16-megabyte DSIMMs, but you can't add a single DSIMM or add one of each type.

Caution -

DSIMMs installed in your system must have been specifically designed to operate in it. Do not remove DSIMMs from a different Sun system and install them in a SPARCclassic or SPARCstation LX system.

About SPARCclassic X DSIMMs

SPARCclassic X terminals come equipped with either 4 megabytes or 8 megabytes of memory, expandable to 96 megabytes. Most 4-megabyte systems contain two 2-megabyte DSIMMs, although some early units may use four 1-megabyte SIMMs instead. The main logic board features six DSIMM slots capable of accepting 1-, 2-, 4-, and 16-megabyte DSIMMs.

The maximum memory configuration is 96 megabytes using six 16-megabyte DSIMMs. You can combine different types of DSIMMs (for example, 2-megabyte and 4-megabyte DSIMMs) in the same system; however, you must add DSIMMs in identical pairs. That is, you can add a pair of 2-megabyte DSIMMs or a pair of 4-megabyte DSIMMs, but you can't add a single DSIMM or add one of each type.

Caution -

DSIMMs installed in your system must have been specifically designed to operate in it. Do not remove DSIMMs from a different Sun system and install them in a SPARCclassic X terminal.

About the SPARCstation LX VSIMM

SPARCstation LX system units can accommodate an optional 1-megabyte video SIMM (VSIMM). The VSIMM, which looks very similar to a DSIMM, allows SPARCstation LX systems to support the following video display resolutions:

Your video display monitor must be capable of supporting one of the above resolutions in order to benefit from the optional VSIMM. Check the documentation supplied with your monitor to see which resolution(s) it supports.

Note - The optional VSIMM is not supported, and cannot be installed in SPARCclassic and SPARCclassic X systems.

Caution -

The VSIMM installed in your SPARCstation LX system must have been specifically designed to operate in it. Do not remove a VSIMM from a different Sun system and install it in a SPARCstation LX system.

Once you install the optional VSIMM, you need to reconfigure your system to take advantage of the higher resolution that the VSIMM offers. See Appendix A for additional details.
