-
boot PROM
-
In Sun workstations, contains the PROM monitor, a command interpreter used
for booting, resetting, low-level configuration, and simple test procedures.
PROM is an acronym for Programmable Read Only Memory.
-
built-in SCSI port
-
The SCSI port on the computer system.
-
bus
-
A signal route to which several parts of a computer system may be connected
so that signals can pass between them. The SCSI bus length cannot exceed 6
meters (20 feet).
-
The total length of the primary SCSI bus includes the length of the external
SCSI cable plus the length of the internal SCSI buses for the device(s) and the
system.
-
The total length of additional SCSI buses (SBus cards installed in systems
providing an additional SCSI host adapter port) includes the length of the
external SCSI cable plus the length of the internal SCSI buses for the device(s).
-
daisy-chain
-
A means of connecting a number of devices to a controller. One cable connects
the controller to the nearest of the devices. A separate SCSI cable connects the
first device to the second device. This process is repeated as required. Install
a regulated SCSI terminator on the SCSI host adapter port of the last SCSI
device in the daisy-chain.
-
Desktop Storage Pack
-
A generic name for either the Desktop Disk Pack, Desktop Backup Pack, or the
Desktop SunCD Pack. This is a SCSI peripheral containing either a disk drive,
a tape drive, or a CD-ROM drive.
-
FSBE/S SBus card
-
An SBus card providing a SCSI host adapter port and an Ethernet port. When
a Multi-Disk Pack, Desktop Disk Pack (or other fast SCSI device), is connected
to this card, information can transfer across the SCSI-2 bus at 10 Mbytes per
second (the fast SCSI transfer rate).
-
Fast SBus Buffered Ethernet/SCSI SBus card
-
See FSBE/S SBus card.
-
fast SCSI
-
The transfer rate (10 Mbytes per second) the disk drives in the Multi-Disk Pack
can transfer information across the SCSI-2 bus at.
-
ID
-
See SCSI address.
-
regulated SCSI terminator
-
A device resembling a SCSI cable without a cord which you connect to the last
unused SCSI host adapter port in the SCSI bus. You must use a regulated SCSI
terminator with devices (such as the disk drives in the Multi-Disk Pack) which
transfer information at the SCSI-2 transfer rate (10 Mbytes per second). See
also fast SCSI.
-
SCSI
-
An acronym for Small Computer Systems Interface.
-
SCSI address
-
A unique number assigned to each SCSI device on the SCSI bus. Each device
on the same SCSI bus must be assigned a separate and unique SCSI address.
-
There are eight available addresses: 0 through 7. You can only assign SCSI
addresses 0 through 6 to SCSI devices. SCSI address 7 is reserved for the SCSI
processor.
-
SCSI bus
-
See bus.
-
SCSI chain
See daisy-chain and bus.
-
SCSI ID
-
See SCSI address.
-
SCSI host adapter port
-
The SCSI connector of the additional SBus card (FSBE/S) added to the
computer system.
-
SCSI port
-
See built-in SCSI port, FSBE/S.
-
SCSI terminator
-
See regulated SCSI terminator.
-
wrist strap
-
A device that provides grounding for static electricity between your body and
the system unit chassis. Electric current and voltage do not pass through the
wrist strap.
