Chapter 4 Printing PDF Document Files

This chapter describes how to download a PDF (Portable Data Format) document file from the docs.sun.com Web site. This chapter also describes how to open and print the file with Adobe® Acrobat Reader.


Note –

When you access books for products that are being Beta tested, the docs.sun.com Web site requests a password. When the product is released in its final version, you no longer need to provide a password to access these books.

How to Download and Print a PDF Document File on the docs.sun.com Site

The docs.sun.com Web site provides most books as a PDF document file for printing. To print a book, follow these steps.

  1. While viewing the book on the docs.sun.com Web site, click the Download PDF tab.


    Note –

    If you are viewing the contents of an HTML book in a second web browser window, return to the primary web browser window in which the HTML book and its collection are displayed and then click the Download PDF tab.


  2. Do you want to use FTP or HTTP to download the document file?

    • If FTP, go to Step 3.

    • If HTTP, on the Download PDF Files page, click PDF Download Using HTTP.


      Note –

      Use HTTP if you cannot use FTP, for example, because a firewall blocks FTP downloads at your site.


  3. On the Download PDF Files page, click the icon or the link to the .pdf document file for the book that you want to print.

    The docs.sun.com Web site downloads the PDF document file.

    • If you you have installed the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in on your system or if you have set up Adobe Acrobat Reader as a helper application in your web browser, the contents of the PDF document file appear in a window.

    • If you have not installed the plug-in or have not set up Adobe Acrobat Reader as a helper application on your system, a dialog box appears that prompts you to save the PDF document file to disk.


      Note –

      To download Adobe Acrobat Reader, on the Download PDF Files page, click Download the Adobe Acrobat Reader.


  4. Is the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in installed or set up as a helper application on your system?

    • If yes, go to Step 5.

    • If no, save the PDF document file, if necessary download Adobe Acrobat Reader, start the application, and open the document file that you downloaded.

  5. Use Adobe Acrobat Reader to print the document file.


    Note –

    To print a range of pages rather than the entire document, click the button before the From box and specify the first page and the last page of the range of pages that you want to print.
