Using the docs.sun.com Web Site

Chapter 1

What's New on the docs.sun.com Web Site

Version 4.3.0 of the docs.sun.comSM web site includes several enhancements to the site's services. Here is a list of the information in this chapter:

What Is docs.sun.com Version 4.3.0?

The docs.sun.com web site is an online library system that publishes Sun technical documentation in the form of books and collections of books. Accordingly, the site's search and browse systems are book-oriented, not file-oriented.

Much of the documentation on this site was authored in SGML and translated into XML for publication. However, some documentation is in HTML format, and some documentation is available only in Portable Data Format (PDF). To the extent possible, the docs.sun.com site treats HTML-based and PDF-only books as peers of XML-based books. However, some features are available only for XML-based books.

The docs.sun.com site is written entirely in the Java™ programming language. Implemented on top of Oracle® software, the site runs under Sun Java System Web Server 6.1. In addition, the site uses Sun Search as its search methodology. The Google Search Appliance serves as the back-end search results provider for Sun Search.

Major Changes in docs.sun.com Version 4.3.0

Sun Search now uses the Google Search Applicance as its back-end search results provider. Here are some of the significant changes:

  • By default, only pages that include all the search terms are returned in the search results. Thus, the search is based on a Boolean AND.

  • To search book titles, you now precede the search syntax with the text "allintitle" followed by a colon (:).
