How to Download and Print a PDF Document on the docs.sun.com Web Site

The docs.sun.com site provides most books as a PDF document for printing, and some books are available only in PDF format.

If you click the title for a PDF-only book on the search results page, and you have the Adobe Reader plug-in installed, the book is automatically downloaded and opened. If you access the book in another way or you don't have the Adobe Reader plug-in installed, follow these steps to download and print a book in PDF format:

  1. While viewing the book (or book title) on the docs.sun.com site, click the Download This Book link.

Note - If you are viewing the contents of an HTML book in a second browser window, return to the original browser window in which the HTML book and its collection are displayed. Then, click the Download This Book link.

A download page for the book is displayed.

  2. To download the book, click one of the following links:

    • Download via FTP

    • Download via HTTP

Note - Use HTTP if you cannot use FTP, for example, because a firewall blocks FTP downloads at your site.

The docs.sun.com site downloads the PDF document. If you have installed the Adobe Reader plug-in, the contents of the PDF document appear in a window. Go to Step 4.

Otherwise, a dialog box appears, prompting you to save the PDF document to disk. Continue with Step 3.

  3. If you have not installed the Adobe Reader plug-in, follow these steps:

    a. Save the PDF document to disk.

    b. To download Adobe Reader, click the Download Adobe Reader link.

    c. Start the Adobe Reader application.

    d. Open the PDF document that you saved to disk.

  4. Use Adobe Reader to print the document.

Note - Use can print the entire document or a range of pages within the document.
