If the ASM instance running on your system is of a version lower than 11.2, then you must migrate your ASM instance to a 11.2 compatible version. This helps you to make use of 11.2 features such as Volumes and ASM Cluster File System.
Use the USM Configuration Assistant: Migrate ASM Page to:
Migrate your ASM instance to the latest version available
Specify the authentication credentials for monitoring the ASM instance
You can connect to the ASM instance as an administrator. You require the following authentication credentials for accessing an ASM instance:
SYS password file authentication
SYSDBA system authentication user privilieges for monitoring the ASM instance
You can manage your ASM instance using SYS password file authentication. To enable the migration of ASM, you must use the SYS password. The SYS user account is automatically created when ASM is created and is granted the SYSASM role. Like a database password file, the only user added to the password file upon creation is SYS. If you want to add other users to the password file, you must share the password file with a database instance and add the users to the database. This authentication allows you to connect to the ASM from a remote location.
