Questions can be directly linked to an outline so that they appear in the outline’s table of contents. Questions that appear in the table of contents are known as inline questions. Inline questions are often used for reinforcement and are usually placed immediately after the concept or topic they are testing.

In the Outline Editor, you add questions to the outline by linking them to any module or section document. If you want to add a question after a topic, you can select the topic and add a question; however, the question links to the selected topic’s parent. After adding a question to the outline, you can move it to another position. Moving the question to another parent, deletes the link to the original parent and reestablishes it to the new parent. Moving a question in the outline does not change its location in the Library, but you can also move the question to another folder in the Library.

New questions are added to the outline with the name "New Question" and are stored in the same folder as the parent. After adding the new question, you can give it a more meaningful name in the outline.

Linking a new question in the Outline Editor does not open the Question Editor. You must open the question to create the question text and responses.

You can preview and test a question from the Outline Editor by selecting the question in the outline and answering it in the Question Preview pane that appears to the right of the question. Use the Take question again button to clear your answer and test a different response.

Questions can be linked to multiple locations within the outline or to other outlines. Deleting a link to a question removes it from the outline but the question remains in the Library and other linked locations. Deleting the question in the Library removes the question from the Library and breaks links to that question in all outlines.

Note: During playback, users can select questions in the outline. If content is tracked, inline questions are tracked in reports as pass/fail, but are not used to determine personalized content (available in the Professional edition only).

To link a new question to an outline:

  1. Display the Outline Editor by opening the outline to which you want to link a new question.

  2. Select the module or section document to which you want to link the new question.

Note: You can also select a topic or another question to insert a new question under it, but the question will link to the selected document's parent.

  3. On the Link menu, point to  New Question and choose the type of question to create.

You can also right-click the parent document in the outline, point to Link New Question and choose the question type.

A new question is linked (and automatically saved) and appears in the outline beneath the parent document with the default name, that you should change. You can also rename the new question after it is linked and saved.

  4. To open the question in the Question Editor, click  Edit question in the Question Preview pane or double-click the question in the outline.

Note: You can link existing questions to an outline using the Link menu and Existing Document command. You can select multiple questions using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click). You can also link questions to an outline by copying them from the Library and pasting them to the parent document in the Outline Editor or by splitting the work area and dragging questions from the Library in one work area to the open outline in the other work area.
