The See Also property allows author to create a relationship between a document and other related content. Use this property to link modules, sections, or topics from an outline or library to other modules, sections or topics in the Outline Editor or Library for publishing to the Player. When the content is viewed in the Player, the See Also links display. The user can click on these links to see the content the author has connected to the content being viewed.

You create a See Also link on a module, section or topic by setting the See Also property in the General section of the Properties pane.

 Multi-user Considerations

See Also links can be published to the Player. Content selected with See Also links not selected during publishing causes the target of the link to be included in the publishing output. This creates a self-contained package so no content is lost.

Note: See Also links can be published to any element (module/section/topic) below the selected root element. The root element is not published, so there is nothing to link a See Also link.

See Also in the Player output

When content is published to the Player, a See Also drop down for a selected document displays in the top right corner of the Player if there is linked content. The order of the See Also links on the Player drop down list is determined by the order the related documents on the See Also property dialog box. When the user clicks on a See Also document in the Player, the related content opens in a separate window. The left pane contains a See Also table of contents that contains all See Also documents for the selected document (module, section or topic).

Note: The See Also table of contents or any documents launched from the See Also table of contents do not contain additional See Also links. See Also links are only available from the original parent document.

Filter See Also links by role

See Also links can be filtered by role. When you publish to the Player, if you filter by role the linked documents must have the same role property set for the See Also link to appear on the drop down list. Like any other role-based filtering, this can be useful to provide related content to the user based on roles. For example, you may have different roles set up for new employees then you do for existing employees. The new employee role might include how to file out a timecard while the existing employee would have no need for this content. By filtering by these roles, the same content can be used but customized to the needs of each experience level. See the Create Roles for Content Filtering topic of the Manage Document Relationships section in the Content Development manual for more information on role-based filtering.

See Also links to missing documents

See Also links that refer to missing or deleted documents creates a warning message in the activity log. The missing document also displays in the Broken Links pane. If all of the See Also links related to a document are broken, the See Also drop down list will not display in the Player.

Customizing See Also links

The appearance of the See Also link drop down list and button text in the Player can be customized in the skin.css file by editing the following elements. The See Also text font, font size, color and background color is controlled by the .tocFrameText element. The background color, size and border of the See Also button are controlled by the .tsep element. The arrow button can be changed by replacing the seealsoarrow graphic in the img folder of the Player style. See the Customize the Player topic of the Publish Content section of the Content Developer manual for more information on customizing the player interface.

Note: When Knowledge Center content is converted for use in the Developer, using Convert>Knowledge Center from the Tools menu, existing Related Sections are converted to See Also links.
