Los esquemas son definiciones que describen los tipos de información que pueden almacenarse como entradas en un directorio del servidor.
Para que un servidor de directorios admita los clientes de nombres LDAP, los esquemas definidos en este capítulo deben estar configurados en el servidor a menos que los esquemas se asignen mediante la función de asignación de esquemas de los clientes.
Varios esquemas LDAP requeridos que define IETF: el esquema del Servicio de información de la red RFC 2307 y RFC 2307bis, y un esquema de perfil de configuración para agentes basados en Protocolo ligero de acceso a directorios (LDAP) (RFC 4876) y el esquema LDAP para servicios de impresora. Para admitir NIS, la definición de estos esquemas se debe agregar al servidor de directorios. Se puede acceder a las distintas RFC desde el sitio web de IETF http://www.ietf.org.
