You can insert a blank frame in a topic. A blank frame is an Explanation frame with a white screenshot. Blank frames are used for adding conceptual frames to edit in a Microsoft PowerPoint overlay. For example, after exporting the topic to Microsoft PowerPoint, you can add an image to the blank frame and annotate it, or add conceptual information by adding a Microsoft PowerPoint layout for a bullet list. See Create Screenshot Overlays for more information about using blank frames. Blank frames can also be edited in your default image editor.

Note: For all frame types, you cannot use an image editor to edit overlay objects that were created in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Blank frames automatically appear in See It! and Try It! mode playback unless the Frame Delay for the frame is set to Skip. However, if the blank frame contains text marked for See It!/Try It! mode, the frame does not appear in See It! mode, but does appear in Try It! mode.

Blank frames appear with no bubbles in See It!/Try It! modes if the frame contains no bubble text, or the text is not marked for those play modes. A bubble does appear in a blank frame if the frame contains text marked for the play mode or the Frame Delay is set to Infinite. An Infinite frame delay adds the template text "Press Enter to continue" to the bubble.

Blank frames only appear in Do It! mode if the bubble contains text marked for Do It! mode.

If you want the blank frame and its overlay contents to appear in print documents such as a Training Guide or System Process, make sure that the blank frame includes bubble text marked for the text output used in the publishing style, and the frame is set to include the screenshot in print. See Control Topic Elements, Specify the Play Mode for Custom Text, and Use Screenshot Publishing in this chapter for more information.
